Description

PCA Currency

UK coins from 1p to £5 and a wallet for every player, with an inventory button, teacher commands and an API for other mods.

PCA Currency was made by Pixel Creators Academy for teaching on Minecraft servers. It adds pounds and pence to the game: nine UK-style coins and a wallet that each player carries. Players put coins into their wallet with one click and take coins out when they want to spend them, for example at a shop. Teachers can give, take and set money with simple commands, which makes it easy to run rewards, class economies or maths activities.

What it's like to use

For players: open your inventory and there's a small gold coin button next to the recipe book. Click it and your wallet opens, showing your balance, for example £7.35. Got a pocketful of coins from a chest or a reward? Press Deposit all coins and they're counted into your wallet in one go. Want to buy something? Click the £1 coin to take one out (shift-click takes ten), then hand it over at a shop. If you can't afford a coin, its button is greyed out, so it's always clear what you can spend.

For teachers and server owners: money becomes something you can use in lessons and events.

  • Rewards: /currency give @a £1 at the end of a lesson, or /currency give Sam 50p for a great answer.
  • Maths practice: students count up coins, work out change and budget for what they want to buy. Taking out £1.37 means picking the right mix of £1, 20p, 10p, 5p and 2p coins.
  • A class economy: set up shops (with PCA Shop, or Create's stock ticker) where students spend coins on blocks, tools or food, and give out wages for jobs.
  • Fair starts: /currency set @a £5 gives everyone the same pocket money for an activity, and /currency set @a 0p resets everyone afterwards.
  • Puzzle prizes: with PCA Puzzle installed, coins turn up in puzzle room chests, so exploring pays off.

How it changes the game: vanilla Minecraft has no money, only bartering with emeralds. PCA Currency adds real-world style coins that players can count, save, spend and earn, with a balance that's safe in their wallet and stays with them between sessions.

Standalone

This mod is standalone. It works in any Forge 1.20.1 world or modpack, on its own, and does not need the Pixel Creators Academy (PCA) server or any PCA service. It was made for PCA's servers, but anyone can use it.

Features

  • Nine coins: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2 and £5, with original pixel art (copper, silver, gold, and a two-tone £5). They stack to 64 and are in the pcacurrency:coins item tag.
  • Normal items: coins are ordinary items, so anything that takes items as payment can use them. That includes Create's stock ticker shops, with no extra setup.
  • A wallet for every player: the balance is saved with the player and kept when they die (you can change that in the config).
  • Wallet button in the inventory screen, next to the recipe book button (in creative, it's beside the Inventory tab's panel). It opens the wallet screen:
    • see your balance in £ and p
    • Deposit all coins puts every coin in your inventory into your wallet
    • take out any coin with one click (shift-click takes 10)
  • Works in adventure mode as well as survival and creative.
  • Safe: the server checks every deposit and withdrawal against the real balance and inventory.

Commands

Command Who Example What it does
/wallet Everyone /wallet Shows your balance
/currency balance <player> Teachers /currency balance Sam Shows a player's balance
/currency give <players> <amount> Teachers /currency give @a £2 Adds money to wallets
/currency take <players> <amount> Teachers /currency take Sam 50p Takes money from wallets
/currency set <players> <amount> Teachers /currency set @a 0p Sets wallets to an amount

Amounts can be written as £1.50, 1.50 or 150p. A plain whole number means pounds, so 5 is £5 and fifty pence is 50p.

Teachers are ops by default. The commands are also the permissions pcacurrency.balance (checking balances) and pcacurrency.admin (give, take, set), so with a permissions mod such as PCA Perms teachers can use them without being ops.

Install requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.1
  • Forge 47 or newer (47.x)
  • Install the mod on the server and on every player's game. It adds items and a screen, so players without it can't join.

Dependencies

No other mods are required.

Mod Required? How it works with PCA Currency
Forge 47+ (Minecraft 1.20.1) Required
Create Optional Coins are normal items, so Create shops can be set up to take them as payment. No special support is needed and nothing changes if Create isn't installed
PCA Puzzle Optional When both are installed, puzzle room chests also contain a few low-value coins. Neither mod needs the other
PCA Shop Add-on Shop counters where students spend their wallet money, run their own shops and sell to teacher shops. PCA Shop needs PCA Currency, not the other way round
PCA Quiz Optional Coin rewards for right answers
PCA JEI (with JEI) Optional Adds a JEI info page for each coin saying what it's worth and how the wallet works

For mod makers: PCA Currency has a small, stable API (CurrencyApi) for checking a balance, taking money and paying money back, including to players who are offline (paid at their next login). Other PCA mods, such as PCA Shop and PCA Quiz, build on it. If your mod uses the API, PCA Currency becomes a dependency of your mod, not the other way round.

Getting started

  1. Install the mod (server and players) and start the server once. It creates:
    • config/pcacurrency-common.toml: server setting keepOnDeath (keep wallets when players die, default on).
    • config/pcacurrency-client.toml on each player's game: showButton (show the wallet button, default on).
  2. Give everyone some pocket money:
   /currency give @a £5
  1. Open your inventory and click the gold coin button to open your wallet. Take out a £1 coin, then press Deposit all coins to put it back.
