This is a feature in development for 0.9.0 which, if it works, will be ported to a Carpenter's Blocks-style mod next year :)

Well, wait no longer! With Pathomania, I will be introducing a variety of new paths and decorative surfaces that any player can create in survival mode.
For wood-based paths, just right-click on planks with any axe.
For stone or hardened clay-based paths, right-click with a pickaxe.
For dirt or sand-based paths, right-click with a shovel
