An outbreak that changes your world

Pathogenesis is an Ovomorphosis addon inspired by Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. It brings the pathogen, environmental contamination, evolving outbreaks, and the Neomorph life cycle into Minecraft.

Discover abandoned dig sites and the dangerous biological material buried within. A single damaged source can turn the surrounding wilderness into a spreading ecosystem of contaminated soil, infectious spores, and hostile creatures.

Contain it early. Once the ecosystem takes hold, cleanup becomes a fight for the land itself.

Pathogenesis features

What Pathogenesis adds

  • Exploration-driven outbreaks: Discover abandoned containment sites, recover fragile pathogen ampules, and investigate dangerous discoveries.
  • A changing world: Pathogen contamination transforms soil, vegetation, and water, spreading beyond its original source.
  • Living pathogen ecology: Growths and spore plants can turn a source-driven outbreak into a self-sustaining ecosystem.
  • Exposure and infection: Contaminated environments threaten living hosts and can accelerate existing infections.
  • The Neomorph life cycle: Infected Host → Bloodburster → Neophyte → Neomorph.
  • Contaminated wildlife and remains: Sick animals, host deaths, carcasses, and feeding sites add to the danger.
  • Dynamic climate interactions: Rain and cold influence pathogen activity, while contaminated ice can preserve an outbreak until thaw.
  • Investigation and containment tools: Use the Pathogen Sampler, protective spore filters, source recovery, and environmental cleanup to reclaim infected land.

From discovery to outbreak

1. Uncover the source

An abandoned dig site may contain sealed, damaged, or leaking pathogen material. A sealed source gives you time to investigate; a compromised one demands immediate attention. Pathogen ampules are fragile, and mishandling them can start an outbreak.

2. Watch the landscape change

Leaking or ruptured sources contaminate nearby terrain. Soil changes, pathogen growth appears, and spore flora creates additional hazards. Contaminated water can spread the threat along shorelines and into neighboring water sources.

3. Survive the infection

Living hosts accumulate exposure in dangerous areas. Infected hosts can progress through increasingly severe stages and ultimately produce a Bloodburster. Bloodbursters grow into Neophytes, then mature into Neomorphs. Sick wildlife and contaminated remains can reveal where the pathogen has already taken hold.

4. Break the ecosystem

A young outbreak depends heavily on its original source. A mature outbreak may have enough pathogen flora to sustain itself even after the source is removed. Stopping it means destroying the supporting growth and removing contamination, not merely recovering the ampule.

5. Reclaim the land

When the source and ecological support are removed, contamination can begin receding from the edges. Surviving flora, infected remains, contaminated water, and dormant ice can still cause renewed activity if missed.

Weather, water, and hidden threats

Weather changes how a pathogen outbreak behaves. Rain influences airborne and water-based activity. Cold suppresses spread, flora growth, and spores, providing an opportunity for containment.

Contaminated ice is dormant, not clean. While frozen it does not spread or cause exposure, but it still preserves pathogen material. When it melts, the contamination returns to the water and may become active again.

Cold buys time. Only complete cleanup removes the threat.

Investigate. Contain. Recover.

The Pathogen Sampler helps you examine contaminated material, assess source conditions, monitor outbreak activity, and distinguish between a source-fed outbreak, an independent ecosystem, and a collapsing zone. It can also help identify dormant or thawing contamination.

Sampling isn't risk-free. Spore filters provide protection, but require maintenance.

To contain an outbreak:

  1. Find and stabilize the source to prevent further leakage.
  2. Reduce exposure while investigating the area.
  3. Destroy pathogen flora sustaining the ecosystem.
  4. Sterilize contaminated terrain with fire and clear dangerous remains.
  5. Recheck the site, including water, surviving growth, and frozen contamination.

Use the Sampler to determine whether your work is actually pushing the outbreak toward collapse.

Infection and treatment

Treatment becomes harder as infection advances. Reducing exposure is not the same as curing an established infection.

Treatment When it helps Conditions
Honey Bottle EXPOSED Can purge the earliest infection and reduce exposure.
Golden Apple EXPOSED / INCUBATING Requires Weakness to reverse infection progression.
Golden Apple + cauterization SYMPTOMATIC Requires Weakness, and being on fire while protected by Fire Resistance.
Enchanted Golden Apple Up to SYMPTOMATIC Requires Weakness; stronger treatment that does not require cauterization.
TERMINAL No cure Infection proceeds to bursting.

Active treatment reverses infection progression and may cause Nausea and Hunger. High or extreme exposure can accelerate an existing infection. Exposure gradually falls when you leave dangerous areas, and washing helps reduce it, but escaping exposure alone does not cure infection.

Surviving the outbreak

Investigate unusual growth before it spreads, treat leaking sources as urgent, and avoid contaminated water. Respond to infection before it reaches its terminal stage. Never assume an empty source means a safe area: mature pathogen ecosystems can survive without it, and frozen contamination may return when thawed.

Find the source. Break the cycle. Reclaim the land.
