Chapter Progression Lock System
OREBOUND Core 0.2.0 introduces a major new progression system designed to make the intended OREBOUND chapter order matter beyond the Quest Book.
Previously, players could sometimes obtain or use powerful technology far earlier than intended through other mods, alternative crafting routes, loot, or systems such as ProjectE.
OREBOUND progression is now actively enforced in Survival.
Chapter-Locked Technology
Supported mods and technologies are now tied to OREBOUND's Main Progression chapters.
Players may still see locked items in JEI or possess them in their inventory, but they cannot use the associated technology until the required chapter has been reached.
The default progression is:
Chapter 2 — Industrial Frontier
Unlocks:
- Create
- Create-related technology
- Powah
Chapter 3 — Beneath the Dense Strata
Unlocks:
- Mekanism
- Mekanism-related technology
Chapter 4 — Deep Industry
Unlocks:
- Applied Energistics 2
- Actually Additions
- Immersive Engineering
- PneumaticCraft
- Twilight Forest progression technology
Chapter 5 — Ancient Machines
Unlocks:
- Industrial Foregoing
- Ars Nouveau
- Occultism
- Mystical Agriculture
- Oritech
- Related addon families
Chapter 6 — Into the Abyss
Unlocks:
- L_Ender's Cataclysm technology and equipment
Chapter 7 — Corebound
Unlocks:
- Draconic Evolution
Chapter 9 — Quantum Industry
Unlocks:
- ProjectE
ProjectE is intentionally placed very late because unrestricted EMC and transmutation can otherwise bypass large portions of OREBOUND's resource progression.
What Progression Locks Prevent
Before the required chapter, Survival players cannot normally:
- Place gated blocks
- Activate gated machines
- Use gated technology
- Mine with gated tools
- Attack with gated weapons
- Equip gated armor or equipment
Locked items can remain in the player's inventory until their chapter is unlocked.
Clear Player Feedback
Locked items now display their progression requirement directly in their tooltip.
Example:
Requires Chapter 4 — Deep Industry
Attempting to use locked technology also displays an OREBOUND progression message explaining exactly which chapter is required.
Inventory-Safe Placement Blocking
Blocked placement has been designed to preserve the player's item immediately.
When attempting to place a locked block:
- The block is not placed
- The item stays in the same inventory or hotbar slot
- Stack count is preserved
- The client receives an immediate slot correction
- The item no longer visually disappears until another inventory action occurs
Additional synchronization is included for modded blocks with delayed client-side placement prediction.
Existing Machines
Already-placed gated machines are not deleted from existing worlds.
If the player has not reached the required progression stage, interaction with that technology is blocked until the appropriate chapter is unlocked.
Guide Book Exemptions
Reference and guide items remain usable even when their associated mod is still progression locked.
This allows players to read mod documentation and prepare for upcoming progression without prematurely gaining access to the actual machines or equipment.
Creative Mode
Creative players bypass progression locks entirely.
This allows pack developers, builders, and testers to continue using all technology normally.
Persistent Progression
OREBOUND progression locks use OREBOUND's own persistent progression advancements rather than requiring FTB Quests directly.
This keeps the system available at the Core mod level while still matching the intended Main Progression chapter order.
Configuration
Progression enforcement can be globally disabled with:
progressionLocksEnabled = false
The default is:
progressionLocksEnabled = true
Existing World Support
- No new world required
- Existing progression remains compatible
- Existing placed machines are preserved
- Previously obtained items are not deleted
