where's the best place to find documentation for this version? I know it's no longer officially supported, but I'm playing an old modpack (Because I'm sentimental, among other reasons).
(To avoid the XY problem: I am, more specifically, looking for documentation on the "extended" search feature)
Just found it from the Technic modpack source I found and used for a Youtube series covering different mod versions. This link is where they store their mods for their modpacks new and old. It's a great archive as the older sources of ChickenBones mods I can't find as far back as 1.5.2 only 1.6.4 sadly. Either way 1.5.2.16 is here: https://github.com/TechnicPack/Technic/blob/master/mods/nei/nei-v1.5.2.16.zip
Does anyone know how to make NIE work with the Legends mod, I'm trying to play CrazyCraft4 and it's really annoying me that I can't check the recipes for Superheroes or like Lightsabers.
if you mean the Legends mod as in in the one made by Tihyo the Superheroes/villains and lightsabers aren't crafted in a crafting table, instead you use a lightsaber forge (already in the mod) and the required parts to make it, you can't craft the lightsaber forge but it's on tython and korriban, as for the Superheroes i think it's called the suit maker and you get the required resources and tokens and hit the create button whilst not wearing any armour
Do you have CodeChickenCore? Mods need core or library mods to run sometimes. If you don't have it NEI will not work. You can find CodeChickenCore by clicking here: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/codechickencore Which you can find by clicking the link to the download not just the download button.
Not Enough Items is JEI before JEI was a thing and had more features included with it. So it has recipe viewing (what it's made from and its uses), cheating things in but also had more like a simpler WAILA/HWYLA feature, a magnet button, gamemode/weather buttons that do the same as the commands only 1 click needed instead and more.
In short, yes, but it is what people used as the go to recipe/cheating things in mod before Just Enough Items existed in 1.8/1.8.8 onwards, NEI has been around since beta/early release versions as far as I remember seeing it and ended support in 1.7.10/1.8 as the creator moved on from modding Minecraft. So JEI is a successor, albeit a simplified version/only including the core aspects of NEI.
You need to enable 'cheat mode' to do this go to the options button in the bottom left corner.
Then go to 'Inventory' at the top of the menu. Once there, select the 'Global' button in the top right of the menu. It will have greyed out buttons. Select the W button next to the Cheat/Recipe/Utility mode and it will enable Cheat Mode for you across all worlds. If you want to just make it stay in Recipe Mode/Utility Mode you can just select between those and not have Cheat Mode active with the W.
Otherwise, if you don't have Cheats enabled when you created the world it won't likely let you cheat and tell you in chat.
1.People don't read. And like with the comment below this, people don't understand how to find versions with the Files tab, which I do come across a lot, sigh.
2.If it's not talked about in a while people don't even know any different or remember it which is sad.
Only people that play 1.7.10 and before still talk about it and remember it well. And as it's just an addon now for 1.9.4+ versions (and only certain people know that or use it) people just go to JEI instead.

Is it similar to Just enough items?

You can get NEI as an addon for JEI now to add the extra features to it here (only works for 1.9.4 to 1.12.2 currently): https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/not-enough-items-1-8.
