Description

🌪️ Natural Disasters: Supercell

Realistic tornadoes, supercells, hurricanes, cold fronts, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes and sandstorms, all driven by a living weather engine.

The sky is alive. Every biome has its own temperature, humidity and pressure. Where hot, dry air meets cool, humid air, storms are born, and some of them grow into supercells.

Available for Minecraft 1.21.1 and Minecraft 26.3 (NeoForge).

⛈️ Weather Engine

  • Atmospheric model: each biome has its own temperature, humidity and pressure, with a day/night cycle and slow drift.
  • Fronts and supercells: deserts next to plains or oceans create unstable fronts that favour violent storms.
  • Storm life cycle: Rain → Thunderstorm → rotating Wall Cloud → Tornado Warning → Touchdown.
  • ❄️ Cold fronts: a long front sweeps across the world. It brings a squall line of thunderstorms under a tiered shelf cloud, then a band of rain, a wind shift and a temperature drop of up to 11 °C, and finally cooler, drier air and clear skies.
  • Alerts: chat messages and on-screen titles tell you the distance and direction when danger approaches.
  • Volumetric clouds replace vanilla clouds:
    • white in fair weather, light grey in rain and dark in thunderstorms;
    • towering cumulonimbus, anvils, rain shafts and lowered wall clouds.

🌪️ Tornadoes

  • EF1 to EF5: size, rotation speed and destructive power scale with intensity.
  • Real vortex physics: mobs, players, items and blocks are pulled in, spun around, lifted and thrown out of the funnel.
  • Block damage by strength: dirt, leaves and wood are ripped out, while stone only gets scratched (stone → cobblestone → gravel).
  • 8 tornado types:
Type Description
Classic The textbook tornado. Some rope out into a thin, snaking funnel before dying.
Multivortex A wide vortex with 2–4 violent suction vortices orbiting inside it.
Wedge A massive, dark wall of debris touching the ground, often wrapped in rain.
Rope Thin, long and twisting across the sky.
Landspout A weak, dusty tornado from ordinary thunderstorms.
El Reno The widest tornado ever recorded: rain-wrapped, with 4–6 sub-vortices and erratic turns.
Firenado Forms when a tornado crosses lava or large fires, and sets everything ablaze. Keeps the shape of the tornado it came from.
Waterspout Forms only over oceans and rivers, and falls apart on land.
  • Realistic visuals: funnels sway and bend (weak tornadoes bend the most), and the condensation funnel doesn't always reach the ground. A huge billowing dust cloud forms at the base.
  • Real debris: particles with the texture of the ground being torn up (grass, dirt, sand, wood, leaves) are thrown out and fall back down.
  • Ground effects: a dust skirt, inflow dust spiralling in from far away, a shadow on the ground, cycloidal scour marks, flattened vegetation and debarked trees.
  • Hemisphere-aware: tornadoes spin counter-clockwise in the north and clockwise in the south.

🎬 Ultra Preset

The Ultra graphics preset aims for photo-realism:

  • 3D clouds: nearby clouds are real 3D volumes with a sunlit side, a bright top, a flat dark base and soft edges. Supercells show a stacked "mothership" mesocyclone.
  • Cinematic tornadoes:
    • a smooth, opaque condensation funnel with spiral striations and ripples running up it;
    • it is a dark silhouette against the sun and pale when the sun is behind you;
    • around it, a debris sheath, rain curtains and inflow scud.
  • Storms:
    • lightning flickering inside the clouds;
    • mammatus under the anvil;
    • a darker, greenish sky under supercells.
  • Golden hour: clouds and tornadoes turn warm orange at sunrise and sunset.
  • Aerial perspective: distant storms fade into a pale, bluish haze.
  • Tsunamis: deep teal water, a curling lip and spray blown off the crest.

🌀 Hurricanes

  • Form over warm oceans (more often in La Niña years in the north), strengthen over the sea and weaken over land, curving towards the pole.
  • A calm eye, a violent eyewall and spiral rain bands, all visible in the sky and on the radar.
  • Hurricane-force winds push you around when you are out in the open, with heavy rain and fog. The storm surge floods the coast, and the rain bands can spawn tornadoes.

🌋 Volcanoes

  • Generated in new terrain. A Volcanoes button on the Create World screen turns them on or off, and remembers your last choice.
  • Eruptions in five phases: tremors → gases → explosion with lava bombs → lava rivers pouring down the sides → rest. The lava cools into obsidian and basalt.

🌊 Other Disasters

  • Tsunamis: a wall of water forms offshore, hits the coast, sweeps entities inland, smashes weak blocks, floods the land and then recedes. Strong earthquakes near the sea can trigger them.
  • Floods:
    • severe storms make rivers and oceans overflow;
    • the water fills valleys like lakes and gets into houses through doors and gaps, down into basements;
    • it is muddy, temporary, and drains away completely.
  • Earthquakes: camera shake, fissures tearing the ground open and collapsing cave ceilings. Small quakes are common and big ones are rare.
  • Sandstorms: desert only. Near-zero visibility, howling wind, and sand layers slowly burying everything.

🌎 Climate

  • Northern or Southern hemisphere, chosen on the Create New World screen.
  • El Niño and La Niña episodes last months of in-game time. They change temperature, humidity, storm frequency, tornado and hurricane activity and droughts, with opposite effects in each hemisphere.

🧱 Blocks and Survival Tools

  • Weather Radar: a working radar screen covering a 500-block radius.
    • Reflectivity map (green → yellow → red → magenta) with hook echoes on supercells, plus a thermal map.
    • Markers for tornadoes, hurricanes, cold fronts, tsunamis, volcanoes and earthquakes.
    • Live readings: temperature, humidity, pressure, wind and El Niño / La Niña.
  • Tornado Siren: a louvered siren box with a rotating horn. It wails when an EF2+ tornado is within 200 blocks, gets louder each time the horn sweeps past you, and outputs a redstone signal.
  • Anemometer: its cups spin with the wind. It shows the speed and direction, and outputs a redstone signal of 0–15.
  • Barometer: its needle drops from Very dry to Storm as danger approaches, and a comparator can read it.
  • Reinforced blocks: Reinforced Concrete, Stone Bricks, Bricks, Planks and Glass, which no disaster can destroy.
  • Storm Shelter Door and Storm Cellar Hatch: steel, disaster-proof and watertight.
  • Sandbags: hold back tsunamis, storm surge and flood water. Put them in your doorway.

⚙️ In-game Settings (key N)

  • Graphics (per player): Low / Medium / High / Ultra presets, plus particles, dust cloud, funnel detail, block debris, ground effects, cloud distance, storm clouds and camera shake.
    • Adaptive performance lowers effects when your FPS drops.
  • Realism (server, for operators or the world owner): Light / Balanced / Realistic / Extreme presets, plus:
    • block damage, flying blocks and their limits, and the maximum EF;
    • storm and disaster frequency;
    • turning each disaster on or off.

⌨️ Commands

All commands work with both /disaster and /disasters (operators only).

Command What it does
/disasters tornado [category] [type] [distance] [start] Spawns a tornado (start: touchdown or formed)

🎨 Compatibility

  • NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1 or 26.3, required on both the server and the client.
  • Multiplayer: works on dedicated servers. Each tornado has a per-tick limit on flying blocks, so weaker computers don't get disconnected.
  • Iris shaders (1.21.1): an automatic compatibility mode turns on when a shader pack is active (experimental).
