Music and Melody

Comprehensive music improvements with a configurable album system, fitting soundtrack overhaul and a collection of music fixes & tweaks

Summary

Music and Melody is a simple, powerful music enhancement project with 3 clear goals:

  • expand Minecraft's soundtrack. This includes a plethora of new songs tailored for each location they're added to, created by community composers (included with their permission, of course). Further, everything is taken an additional step, with the option for easily-expandable biome, structure and event music pools
  • fix shortcomings with the vanilla music system. Recent updates have destroyed the weighting and balance of music, both new and old, and this is only getting worse in new updates. Music and Melody not only reweights every music pool, but adds additional fixes for vanilla bugs (such as creative music not playing when it should), and additional quality of life features (including Jukeboxes no longer overlapping with background music)
  • every change must be configurable. You can disable the new music, the backported music, the bug fixes, the QOL changes, the new music pools - hell, you can even add your own custom ones! If you just want this project for a single feature, you can do just that, and most of our features are client-side, too. That's right, Music and Melody works on vanilla servers!

Albums

Music and Melody introduces an advanced albums feature, which lets you view and edit all available albums in a new menu accessed from the options screen.

Here, you can view all unique albums, whether they're from vanilla, Music and Melody or a supported resource pack / mod. You are able to enable and disable entire albums, or even individual tracks at your leisure.

You can check out the gallery for an in-game example of the Albums screen.

Albums are entirely resource-driven, so if you're a resource pack, mod or modpack developer, you can easily add your music to the album system!

Albums are stored in `assets/[namespace]/albums/[album_name].json`

`name` - can be a literal or translatable name for the album
`icon` - an optional, direct path to an album icon. If not provided, defaults to the vanilla fallback icon
`composers` - an optional integer representing the total unique composers credited in the album. If not provided, a value is not displayed in the Albums screen
`tracks` - a list of strings that represent the path to an individual track in the album. All tracks are assumed to be under the same namespace as the album

You do not need to provide translation strings for each Album track - these are fetched automatically from the vanilla "now playing" popup translations, so no additional work is required.

Features

Every feature listed below is individually configurable, both in-game or in the config file.

Features that work on the client:

  • Music Rebalance. The reweighting of every vanilla music pool with an emphasis on restoring variety and reducing repetition added by poor decision-making in recent updates (see this explanation and MC-308155 for context). This does include re-adding C418 music to biomes Mojang removed certain tracks from, making common tracks slightly rarer, and rarer tracks more common, and a ton more smaller changes
  • Albums. You can individually toggle every resource-registered album, to enable or disable tracks from the specified album from playing throughout the entire game. The below albums are available by default, with just Music and Melody installed - add supported mods or music resource packs to get more!
  • - Music & Melody. This album includes a ton of carefully-selected tracks that match the classic style of Minecraft's OSTs. These songs play only where it suits them, and are weighted so as to not clog up the chances of existing songs you already know and love. _See a playlist with most (but not all) of the included tracks here_
  • - Spinoff Music. Select, suitable tracks from official Minecraft spinoffs are included in this album
  • - Volume Alpha. The original album of classic Overworld tracks by C418
  • - Volume Beta. C418's second album, which includes Nether, End, Creative and Menu music
  • - Update Aquatic. C418's 3 underwater tracks
  • - Nether Update. Lena Raine's Nether soundtrack
  • - Caves & Cliffs. An album of songs, primarily for caves and mountains, by Lena Raine and Kumi Tanioka
  • - Wild Update. The 3 tracks by Lena Raine which primarily play in swamps
  • - Trails and Tales. Songs by Aaron Cherof which play throughout the Overworld
  • - Tricky Trials. Songs by Aaron Cherof, Kumi Tanioka and Lena Raine which play throughout the Overworld
  • - Chase the Skies. An album by Amos Roddy which plays throughout the Overworld
  • - Chaos Cubed. An album by fingerspit which plays throughout the Overworld. This album has also been backported to 26.1
  • Jukebox Fading. When you're listening to a music disc, background music temporarily fades away
  • Fade Speed. The speed at which background music fades away when listening to Jukeboxes
  • Creative Fix. A fix for MC-299683, restoring the ability for Creative music to play in all Overworld biomes. You can also tag a biome in #music_and_melody:has_creative_music if you want a non-Overworld biome to have this fix
  • Under Water Fix. Based on the Creative Fix, this fixes MC-306710 and enforces the under-water-exclusive music being able to play in all rivers and oceans. You can also tag a biome in #music_and_melody:has_under_water_music if you want a non-river or non-ocean biome to have this fix
  • Event Weight Fix. This fixes a flaw (not necessarily a bug) in vanilla code that makes sounds.json files ignore the weight specified for "type": "event". The fix is only applied to entries that specify an explicit weight, ensuring safe compatability with vanilla & modded sound pools, whilst allowing Music and Melody to utilise this fix in its own pools. This also allows the further fixing of Creative music frequency, seeing as Creative music references the music.game sound event
  • Wither Music. Adds a wither-specific music pool, much like the Ender Dragon, which plays the Wither Storm Theme by default
  • End Portal Music. Plays a unique song when the End Portal is lit
  • Common Music. Uses a unique music_and_melody:music.common pool which by default contains the 12 classic C418 Overworld tracks. Enabling this feature removes any tracks within this pool from all other music pools. All those pools instead get a specific % chance of playing one of these songs. Basically allows you nostalgia nerds to configure how much you want to hear C418 music (or any other songs you really like if you append the pool with a resource pack). Defaults to disabled
  • Common Music Chance. The chance of the common music pool playing, if enabled. Defaults to 50%
  • Albums Button. The Albums button, shown in the Options screen, has configurable positioning and dimensions

Features that require Music and Melody to also be installed on the server:

  • Biome Music. An endlessly expandable list of biomes and music pools, so that you can create your own biome-specific music pools. Includes Snowy, Savanna, Dark Forest and Main End Island ones by default
  • - the specified Key can either be a biome id or tag
  • - the specified pool can be any pool, however if you want it to be a custom one (not one from vanilla or another mod), you must use the music_and_melody namespace so that it can be safely registered for you
  • Structure Music. An endlessly expandable list of structures and music pools, so that you can create structure-specific music. Includes Strongholds and Ancient Cities by default
  • - the specified Id must be structure id
  • - the specified pool can be any pool, however if you want it to be a custom one (not one from vanilla or another mod), you must use the music_and_melody namespace so that it can be safely registered for you
  • Structure Music Min. The minimum wait time between structure music playing
  • Structure Music Max. The maximum wait time between structure music playing
