Minecraft 1.21.1 | Fabric

Complete rebuild. The 1.20.1 release was a Fabric-only prototype. This version is also Fabric-only for now — the underlying architecture supports multi-loader, but Forge and NeoForge builds are not yet available. Every system — entities, items, blocks, rendering, taming, interaction — has been redesigned or replaced.

Save data from 1.20.1 is not compatible with this release. The data format changed substantially (integer IDs to string variant keys, flat NBT to structured compound). A migration path is tracked for a future release.

Entity Changes

Mandrake

1.20.1: 4 entity types — mandrake_girl_brown, mandrake_girl_chorus, mandrake_girl_glow_berry, mandrake_girl_green. Each was a separate entity class.

1.21.1: 3 entity types — mandrake_chorus_girl, mandrake_flower_girl, mandrake_fructus_girl. Consolidated into a single MandrakeFamily class. Brown and Green variants merged into one family. Glow Berry is now Fructus.

  • Biome-aware spawn texture selection per variant
  • Per-variant ambient sounds (mandrakesounds, mandrake_song, fruity_mandrake)
  • Shared hurt and death sounds across all variants
  • Animation-linked sounds for sing and sing2 special animations (Flower variant)

Puffball Formerly mushroom_girl_ender_puffball 2 texture variants (Default, Pale). End biome spawn. Genesis: Ender Mushroom block. PlantingFeature: plants Ender Mushroom on End Stone. Taming item changed: now Chorus Fruit (was Cookie). Per-variant emissive glow (dynamic path).
Fluffball New Flying subspecies of Puffball. End biomes spawn at weight 4 (rarer). Same genesis/taming/planting as Puffball. Uses FlyTamableEntity base. Emissive glow layer.
Snowball Carried over Snowy biomes spawn (Ice Spikes, Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga, Frozen Peaks, etc.). Genesis: Snowball Mushroom block. EmanationFeature: slows and freezes attack targets. PlantingFeature: plants Snowball Mushroom on snow/mycelium. Emissive glow layer. Taming items: Snowball or Cookie.
Soul Wanderer Carried over Soul Sand Valley spawn (weight 6, rare). Genesis: Soul Wanderer Fungus block. EmanationFeature: wither on targets + self-regeneration; bonus damage vs undead. PlantingFeature: plants Soul Wanderer Fungus on soul sand/soul soil. Multi-item taming: Rotten Flesh, Cookie, or Nether Wart. Emissive glow layer. Halloween witch hat overlay.
Warped Formerly split as mushroom_girl_warped + mushroom_girl_warped_rare Warped Forest spawn (planned). Genesis: Warped Fungus in Nether. PlantingFeature: plants Warped Fungus on Warped Nylium. BellyFeature: Warped is the only family with authored belly textures (CHUBBY at level 1, TUMMY at level 2).

Removed: MushroomSnowball and MushroomSoulWanderer were previously separate entity classes with their own item stacks. Both are now unified families in the shared system. mushroom_girl_crimson_rare and mushroom_girl_warped_rare no longer exist as separate entity registrations — their aesthetics are now texture variants within the Crimson and Warped families respectively.


Bee

1.20.1: 1 entity type (bee_girl) — single class.

1.21.1: BeeFamily — 5 variants: Default, Firefly, Pixie, Silk Moth, Black Moth. All resolved through the shared variant system rather than separate entity registrations.


Globberie

1.20.1: Not present.

1.21.1: GlobberieFamily — 3 variants: Pink, Pink Twintails, Yellow. New species. Custom death sound.


Gourdragora

1.20.1: 6 entity types — 3 types (Jack-o-Lantern, Pumpkin) × 3 sizes (mini, default, big), each as a separate entity class with hardcoded dimensions: gourdragora_girl_jack_lantern, gourdragora_girl_jack_lantern_big, gourdragora_girl_jack_lantern_mini, gourdragora_girl_pumpkin, gourdragora_girl_pumpkin_big, gourdragora_girl_pumpkin_mini.

1.21.1: 3 entity families — gourdragora_golden, gourdragora_lumina, gourdragora_jacko. Sizes are now appearance variants within each family using SizeVariantFeature and CompositeAppearanceFeature:

  • Size spawn weights: Mini 40%, Default 40%, Big 20%
  • Dynamic hitboxes per size: Mini (0.5×0.8), Default (0.8×1.5), Big (1.7×2.5)
  • Stat multipliers per size — big hits harder, tanks more; mini hits lighter, moves freely
  • Stats restored correctly on world reload (NBT persistence fixed)
  • gourdragora_lumina is a new colour family (no 1.20.1 equivalent)
  • gourdragora_jacko replaces Jack-o-Lantern; October-only spawn restriction moved to spawn registration
  • gourdragora_golden replaces Pumpkin; taming items changed to Cake + Bone Meal (was Pumpkin Pie + Bone Meal)

Slime

1.20.1: 1 entity type (slime_girl) — single class.

1.21.1: SlimeFamily — Blue variant. Custom ambient, hurt, and pop (animation-linked) sounds.


Spook

1.20.1: 2 entity types — spook_girl_peach, spook_girl_teal. No Cream variant.

1.21.1: SpookFamily — 3 variants: Cream (new), Peach, Teal. Custom ambient, hurt, and attack sounds.


Wisp

1.20.1: 3 entity types — wisp_girl_blue, wisp_girl_green, wisp_girl_yellow. Separate entity classes.

1.21.1: WispFamily — 3 variants: Blue, Green, Yellow. Consolidated into one family. Custom ambient, hurt, death sounds. Wisp now instantly kills Vex and Phantom targets, playing a dedicated kill sound.


New Systems

EmanationFeature

Rule-based passive ability system. Declares what happens when an entity attacks, gets hurt, or crosses a health threshold — without overriding entity methods. Used by Molten (ignite on attack), Snowball (slow + freeze on attack), Soul Wanderer (wither + regen + undead bonus), and Gourdragora (survival regen).

ExchangeFeature

Rule-based item interaction system. Declares what item inputs produce what item outputs, under what conditions, with what cooldown — without bespoke interaction code. Used by Amanita and Brown (bowl → stew). Replaces the 1.20.1 per-entity interactMob overrides.

OverlayFeature (rendering)

Multi-slot composited layer renderer. Three slot types:

  • RANDOM — texture chosen once at spawn, persisted. Used for Halloween costumes (pumpkin hats for brown-model mushrooms; witch hats for default-model mushrooms).
  • ALWAYS — texture rendered unconditionally every frame. Used for emissive glow layers on Crimson, Molten, Puffball, Snowball, Soul Wanderer, Warped, and Gourdragora.
  • CONDITIONAL — texture rendered only when a RenderCondition is true. Used for Jack'o face cover (visible only when carving slot is empty) and Halloween costumes (visible only in October).
  • INTERACTIVE — texture cycled by player interaction (shears). Used for Gourdragora carving stages.

In 1.20.1 emissive glow was handled per-entity in bespoke renderer classes. All glow, costume, and carving logic is now declarative on the family descriptor.

BellyFeature + BellyLevel

Structured belly progression replacing the 1.20.1 TextureID offset hack (where belly levels were encoded as extra texture IDs above the base count). Levels: SLIM (1), CHUBBY (2), TUMMY (3), INFLATED (4), CHUNKY (5). Level 0 = no belly. Feeding an apple increments level; feather decrements. Warped Mushroom is the only family with authored belly textures in this release.

GenesisFeature

Genesis Powder taming is now a declarative feature on each family rather than a per-item lookup table. Each family declares the block it triggers on, an optional dimension, and optional biome filters. Resolution picks the most specific match — dimension+biome beats dimension-only beats unconditional. The single powder_genesis item works across all families through this registry.

ConditionalAppearanceFeature

Biome-conditional texture variant selection at spawn. Used by Amanita (Pharia in jungle/lush/mangrove, Yellow in conifer biomes, Red in other forests) and Brown (Ruby in taiga, Scarlatina in dark forest, Orange Birch in birch forests, Boletus elsewhere). In 1.20.1 this was either not present or hardcoded per-entity.

Animation Profile System (HZLib)

All entities now use the HZLib AnimationProfile — named slots (idle, walk, rest, sit, ride, attack, hurt, specials) with pool-based selection and LoopBehavior. In 1.20.1 each entity class managed its own GeckoLib controller setup directly.

1.20.1 had no custom sound event registry beyond whatever was baked into individual entity classes. 1.21.1 introduces a centralized MonstersSounds registry:

  • Mandrake: 3 ambient variants (Chorus, Flower, Fructus), shared hurt + death
  • Mushroom: Standard ambient, weird ambient (Inkcap), greeting, weird greeting
  • Slime: Ambient, hurt, pop (animation-linked)
  • Wisp: Ambient, hurt, death, vex-kill
  • Spook: Ambient, hurt, attack
  • Gourdragora: 3 size-keyed ambients (Mini, Default, Mega), roar
  • Globberie: Death
  • Puffball: Puff-out, puff-in (animation-linked)

Known Issues / Missing Features in 1.21.1

  • Mushroom hat armor items (12 helmets from 1.20.1) not yet ported
  • Bowl interaction system (stew dispensing) planned — Amanita and Brown use ExchangeFeature as a temporary path; remaining families not yet wired
  • Inkcap combat poison effect not yet implemented
  • Molten food-cooking special (right-click raw food to cook it) not yet implemented
  • Puffball passive Puffy aura (owner gets jump boost nearby) not yet implemented
  • Snowball powder-snow walk not yet implemented
  • Soul Wanderer spawn and genesis not fully wired
  • Warped spawn and genesis not fully wired

Architecture: Standalone Fabric mod. Each entity type was a separate class. No shared feature system. Integer IDs for texture/model/animator variants. Belly state encoded as texture ID offset. No custom effects. No custom sounds registry.
