Modern Forge Connect (MFCL)
ModernForgeConnectLoader / ModernForgeConnectLib
A cross-version compatibility loader and developer library for Minecraft Forge.
Overview
Modern Forge Connect (MFCL) is an experimental compatibility project designed to run original Minecraft Forge 1.7.10 mods within Minecraft Forge 1.20.1.
Unlike traditional mod ports, MFCL aims to preserve and execute original legacy mod code without requiring modifications to the original mod JAR files.
MFCL also provides a developer API, allowing modern Forge addons to interact with legacy mods through a cross-version compatibility layer.
The project combines two major components:
- ModernForgeConnectLoader — Loads and executes original legacy Forge mods in an isolated runtime.
- ModernForgeConnectLib — Provides APIs and compatibility tools for communication between modern and legacy mod environments.
Both components share the abbreviation MFCL.
Tested Legacy Mods
MFCL is currently being developed and tested with several original Minecraft Forge 1.7.10 mods.
The following mods have been used for compatibility testing:
| Mod | Tested Version | Current Compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Thaumcraft 4 | 4.2.3.5 | Experimental — initialization, selected gameplay mechanics, Thaumonomicon, scanning, research and rendering |
| Baubles | 1.0.1.10 | Experimental — legacy dependency loading and selected integration features |
| NotEnoughItems (NEI) | 1.0.5.120 | Experimental — initialization, inventory overlay, item searching and recipe interfaces |
| AcademyCraft | 1.0.7 | Experimental — initialization, basic content registration and selected block interactions |
Thaumcraft 4 Integration
Thaumcraft 4 is one of the primary reference mods used during MFCL development.
Currently implemented and tested features include:
- Original Thaumcraft 4 initialization.
- Selected original item and block rendering.
- Thaumonomicon interfaces and interactions.
- Thaumometer scanning and research knowledge.
- Selected legacy GUI and player-data synchronization.
- Recognition of modern Minecraft items and blocks through additional compatibility integrations.
The TC4-Modern project provides modern content integration and developer-facing APIs built on top of MFCL.
Important Compatibility Notice
Tested does not mean fully compatible.
The features listed above represent specific tested functionality, not complete support for every mechanic of each mod.
Some gameplay systems may be incomplete or behave differently from their original Minecraft 1.7.10 implementations.
Other legacy mods may load successfully, fail during initialization, or encounter unsupported Minecraft systems.
Compatibility will continue to improve as MFCL develops.
Please report compatibility issues with the original mod name, version, reproduction steps and relevant logs.
Key Features
Legacy Forge Mod Loading
- Runs supported original Forge 1.7.10 mods in a Forge 1.20.1 environment.
- Uses an isolated legacy runtime with original Forge Mod Loader (FML) functionality.
- Supports selected legacy CoreMods and class transformations.
- Does not require modifying the original mod JAR files.
Cross-Version Compatibility
MFCL provides compatibility mechanisms for selected Minecraft systems, including:
- Items, blocks, and registry mappings
- Item metadata and NBT data
- Legacy GUI rendering and interactions
- Selected world and player operations
- Supported rendering and sound systems
- Language and resource integration
Compatibility varies depending on the legacy mod and the features it uses.
Developer API and Library
MFCL provides a cross-version development API for modern Forge addon developers.
Features include:
- MFCL Legacy Accessor (MLA) for accessing legacy classes and methods.
- Controlled access to the legacy runtime.
- Cross-version object and registry mappings.
- Legacy player context management.
- Modern content representations for legacy systems.
- Language supplementation and overrides.
This allows developers to create modern addons that integrate with original legacy mods without directly depending on incompatible Minecraft 1.7.10 classes.
Modern Addon Development
MFCL enables a new approach to legacy mod integration.
Instead of completely rewriting an old mod, developers can create modern compatibility addons that connect new Minecraft content with the original mod's systems.
For example, supported integrations can allow original Thaumcraft 4 scanning mechanics to recognize modern Minecraft items and blocks.
Current Compatibility
MFCL currently targets:
| Component | Version |
|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.20.1 |
| Modern Mod Loader | Forge 47.4.28 |
| Java | 17 |
| Legacy Minecraft | 1.7.10 |
| Legacy Forge | 10.13.4.1614 |
Development and testing have included original legacy mods such as:
- Thaumcraft 4
- Baubles
- NotEnoughItems (NEI)
- AcademyCraft
Important: Testing certain features does not mean the entire mod is fully compatible.
Installation
- Install Minecraft Forge 1.20.1 and Java 17.
- Install a compatible MFCL build in your
modsfolder. - Place supported original Forge 1.7.10 mod JAR files in
mods/1.7.10/. - Prepare the required private legacy runtime according to the project documentation.
- Launch Minecraft and check the MFCL logs for compatibility or loading errors.
MFCL does not bundle Minecraft 1.7.10, legacy Forge, or third-party mod JAR files.
For detailed setup instructions, please consult the GitHub repository.
Experimental Status
MFCL is under active development and is not a universal Forge 1.7.10 compatibility solution.
Some features are incomplete or experimental, including:
- General legacy entity behavior and AI
- Complex world generation
- Advanced machine and block entity logic
- Arbitrary legacy network protocols
- Full event and lifecycle compatibility
- Dedicated server support
- Mod-specific rendering and gameplay mechanics
Some mods may fail to start, crash, or exhibit incomplete functionality.
Back up your worlds before testing.
