Villager Identity Enhancement

Villager Identity adds personality, trust, dialogue, gifts, home memory, family links, and culture-based behavior profiles to Minecraft villagers.

Villager Identity

Villager Identity gives Minecraft villagers a stronger sense of memory, personality, home, family and community while keeping the familiar vanilla village feel. It does not replace vanilla villagers. Instead, it adds a lightweight identity layer on top of the systems Minecraft already has.

The core idea is simple:

VillagerTypesMod can give villagers a homeland and village style. Villager Identity makes those villagers behave like people from that homeland.

What This Mod Does

Villager Identity adds persistent social and cultural behavior to villagers. Villagers can remember individual players, react to how the village has been treated, keep track of homes, form family links, speak short contextual lines and use culture profiles based on their villager type.

The goal is not to turn villagers into full chatbot AI or replace Minecraft’s village mechanics. The goal is to make villages feel more alive, personal and varied while still feeling like Minecraft.

Main Features

Personal Trust

Each villager can have personal trust toward each player.

Trust can rise or fall based on player behavior, such as trading or harming villagers. This trust is separate from vanilla gossip and reputation, so the mod does not replace Minecraft’s normal trading, gossip or reputation systems.

Trust levels influence how villagers react to the player and can unlock small social rewards, such as more positive dialogue or trusted gifts.

Village Trust and Community Memory

Villages can also remember players as a community.

Village trust is separate from personal trust. A single villager may trust you personally, while the wider village may still be neutral, wary or grateful depending on your actions around the community.

Village memory can be connected to village anchors such as bells, homes and fallback village regions. This allows the mod to treat a village as more than just a group of individual mobs.

Dialogue and Chatter

Villagers can speak short contextual lines.

Dialogue is designed to feel like quick villager barks, not chatbot conversations. Lines can reflect trust, village type, profession, weather, time of day, family context, danger, gifts or community mood.

Ambient chatter uses the actionbar to stay subtle. More direct moments, such as greetings, trust lines, gift lines, return lines, and danger reactions can appear in chat.

Named villagers use their custom name when speaking. Unnamed villagers use simple labels such as their profession or “Villager.”

Gifts

Trusted villagers can occasionally give small gifts.

Gifts are modest and vanilla-friendly. Adult villagers and child villagers use separate gift pools, and gift tables can vary by villager type. Children use tiny, sweet gifts such as flowers, cookies, seeds, apples, berries, petals or similar low-value items.

Gifts are based on personal trust, not village trust. They are meant to feel emotional and rare, not like a farm.

Home Memory

Villagers can remember their owned home.

When a villager has a valid vanilla home memory, Villager Identity can remember that home and help preserve it. This helps reduce the feeling of villagers constantly stealing each other’s beds while still allowing vanilla fallback behavior when a bed is missing, destroyed or invalid.

The mod does not replace vanilla POI or bed logic. It works gently with the existing system.

Families and Children

Villager Identity adds family memory for villagers.

Children can remember guardians and guardians can remember children. Family links can affect subtle behavior, such as children staying closer to guardians, guardians checking on distant children, family-aware dialogue and family priority during soft alarm behavior.

Villager children also use an extended growth system. The default child growth duration is configurable through a simple text config file.

Culture-Based Villager Profiles

Villagers can behave differently based on their villager type.

Profiles can influence things like social behavior, shelter preference, outdoor preference, alarm sensitivity, trust gain, family bonding, child social behavior, meeting behavior, gift tables, dialogue voice and lightweight culture routines.

This is where the mod’s identity concept becomes strongest: villagers from different homelands can feel subtly different without replacing vanilla schedules, jobs, beds, panic, gossip or trading.

Configuration

Villager Identity uses a simple text config file for player-facing settings.

On first run, the mod creates:

config/villageridentitymod.txt

This file can be used to adjust supported settings, such as villager child growth time for now. More to be added soon.

If the config file is missing, unreadable or has an invalid value, the mod safely falls back to its built-in defaults.

Behavior profiles and dialogue are handled by the mod internally so the experience works out of the box with VillagerTypesMod and vanilla villager types.

Optional Companion Mod Compatibility

Villager Identity is designed to work together with VillagerTypesMod.

VillagerTypesMod is responsible for adding the new villager types and village styles. Villager Identity builds  on top of that by giving those villagers a homeland identity, trust, dialogue, gifts, home memory, family links, village memory and culture-based behavior.

When Villager AI is also present, identity movement requests can be handed off more carefully so the AI/pathfinding mod remains responsible for navigation reliability.

Villager Identity itself remains the social, trust, home, family, dialogue, gift and culture layer.

How It Works

Villagers can react based on several pieces of context:

  • their villager type from VillagerTypesMod or vanilla Minecraft
  • their profession
  • their personal trust toward a player
  • their village’s trust toward a player
  • their home
  • their family links
  • nearby danger
  • time of day
  • weather
  • culture profile settings

The mod keeps vanilla Minecraft behavior intact and adds subtle decisions around it. Villagers still use vanilla jobs, beds, schedules, trading, gossip, panic and POIs.

Compatibility

Villager Identity is intended to be used with VillagerTypesMod, since VillagerTypesMod provides the new village types and homeland system that this mod expands into personality and culture.

Compatibility includes:

  • VillagerTypesMod: required for the full intended experience; provides custom villager types and village styles for identity profiles to use.
  • Villager AI: optional companion mod that can own advanced pathfinding, route correction, panic safety and stuck recovery while Villager Identity focuses on social behavior.

Villager Identity focuses on behavior and identity. VillagerTypesMod provides the village type foundation.

Commands

Villager Identity includes testing and debug commands for pack makers, server owners, and development worlds.

Common commands include:

/villageridentity debug nearest
/villageridentity debug nearby
/villageridentity compat
/villageridentity stats
/villageridentity profile nearest
/villageridentity village key_nearest
/villageridentity family nearest

Trust commands:

/villageridentity trust get_nearest
/villageridentity trust set_nearest <value>
/villageridentity trust get <villager> <player>
/villageridentity trust set <villager> <player> <value>

Village trust commands:

/villageridentity village trust get_nearest
/villageridentity village trust set_nearest <value>

Testing commands:

/villageridentity gift test_nearest
/villageridentity alarm test_nearest
/villageridentity culture test_nearest
/villageridentity home clear_nearest

Maintenance commands:

/villageridentity config reload
/villageridentity cleanup dry_run
/villageridentity cleanup run

These commands are intended mainly for testing, debugging, and modpack tuning.

Recommended For

Villager Identity is recommended for players and modpacks that want villages to feel more personal, reactive, and culturally distinct without losing the vanilla Minecraft atmosphere.

It fits especially well in:

  • vanilla-plus modpacks
  • village expansion packs
  • roleplay or survival worlds
  • custom biome or custom village packs
  • modpacks using villager type or village generation mods
  • worlds where players want villagers to feel remembered, local, and alive

Known Limitations

Villager Identity is intentionally subtle. It does not force villagers into constant custom behavior, and some effects may only appear over time through trust, village memory, family links, or culture routines.

Behavior may vary when used with other mods that heavily replace villager AI, schedules, professions, POIs, or trading.

The mod also does not provide full conversational AI. Dialogue is made of short contextual lines, not live generated conversations.

Short Summary

Villager Identity adds trust, dialogue, gifts, homes, families, village memory, and culture profiles to Minecraft villagers while preserving the vanilla village feel.
