Design your own hats in a 3D editor, build them at a milliners table in survival and wear them over your armor. Purely cosmetic. Fabric, Minecraft 26.3 and 1.20.1. Beta.
I wanted hats in Minecraft that are more than a recoloured helmet, so I made a small 3D editor and a crafting table to go with it. You build a hat out of boxes, finish it at the table, and wear it on top of your armor. It changes how you look and nothing else.
Making a hat Craft a Milliner's Table and right-click it. The editor opens with a little mannequin on a stage.
Boxes: add them, drag them around, resize them, turn them. Hold Shift or Ctrl for finer steps, or type exact numbers.
Paint: every box (or a single face of it) gets one of 61 vanilla block textures and one of the 16 dyes. Groups, mirror, ring: parts in a group move and turn together. Mirror them, or spread one spike into a ring of eight.
Shapes and Scale: the Shapes menu adds a clean circle, star, heart, cone, sphere, ring and a few more as one group. Scale makes the selection bigger or smaller by percent.
Plain bases: basic hat, tall hat, flat cap, beanie, wide brim, bucket hat, cone hat, crown and headband, so you do not have to start from an empty stage. Undo and redo everything. Your draft is saved while you work. A hat can have up to 256 boxes. The detailed ones in the screenshots use over 200.
Survival
It is meant to be playable, so you pay for hats with items:
What you need
Hat Form (wool, leather and a string) one per hat, crafted once Dye one for every three boxes of the same colour Precious materials the real thing: a gold ingot for gold, diamonds for diamond, leather for leather Wool, wood, stone, glass free A plain beanie comes to about nine items. A hat with hundreds of boxes in one colour wants a lot of dye, which is the point of making it a big project. The editor shows the full list while you build (press L), and creative mode is free.
Wearing and sharing
Wear it: right-click a hat, or open the wardrobe with H. It sits in its own slot over your armor, stays when you die, and other players see it. Helmet eye: a small eye in the wardrobe hides your helmet while you wear a hat, in case the two clip into each other. Patterns: a Pattern is a sheet of paper that holds one design. Hand it to a friend, open it at the table to change it, or build a hat from it. Copying: put a hat or Pattern in the middle of a crafting grid with eight paper around it. Text code and files: copy a design as a text code (MILLINER1:…) or drag a .hat file onto the editor. Locking: authors can lock a design so it cannot be copied, and the server enforces that. Seven hats you have to earn You cannot make these from a template. Their Patterns drop out in the world, and each has an advancement so you can see what you are hunting for.
Hat How to get the Pattern
Chicken Hat: Kill a chicken while holding an egg in your off hand
Fish Hat: Fish in open water, it turns up now and then
Beekeeper's Hat: Pick up a bee nest with Silk Touch while three bees are inside
Beacon Crown: Power a beacon on a full four-tier pyramid
Wither Crown: Kill the Wither
Dragon Crest: Kill the Ender Dragon
Guardian Helm: Kill an Elder Guardian
Servers
The mod has to be installed on the server and on every client, because it adds a block and items. The server checks every design and works out every price itself, so a modified client cannot cheat its way to a cheaper hat.
Settings
cost.mode STANDARD, LIGHT (only the form and dyes) or FREE hats_enabled switch hats off completely allow_helmet_toggle allow or forbid the helmet eye /milliner clear take a worn hat off a player Good to know You build with boxes and the game's own block textures. You cannot import a picture or a skin into a hat. This is a beta by one person. The automated tests start the real game and click through the editor, but a few hours of play by real people will find things they do not. If something looks wrong, tell me which version you have and attach latest.log. 1.20.1 is a separate file of the same mod. It has no copper helmet in the helmet menu, because that game has no copper armor. Other versions and NeoForge are possible later. I will see how many people want them. English only for now.
