What's new

Maps and Quills 0.1.4 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge)

Requires Holdfast Factions. The server and every player need to update together: a 0.1.4 client cannot join a 0.1.3 server, or the other way round.

New
- Fog of war. Your faction's map now shows the ground your members have actually been near, plus the ground of any faction that shared its map with you (/maq share). Everything else stays dark, and so do the borders on it, so other factions' claims show up once you have explored there. Your own faction's borders always show. A player with no faction explores alone and brings it all along when they join one. Servers that want the old behaviour can set [fog] enabled = false in warpaint-common.toml. Thanks to ghostcrumb for the idea.
- The whole map, zoomed out. Zoom far enough out and the map switches to a small picture of each 512-block area sent by the server, so you can see your whole world at once instead of a patch around you. Thanks to Xmat5 for the design.
- World border on the map and the minimap, with the ground beyond it shaded. There is a "World border" switch in the legend. Thanks to ghostcrumb.
- Pick your line weight and colour before you draw. Pick a line, arrow, box, circle or freehand tool and a small panel next to the toolbar offers Thin, Medium and Thick (each drawn at its real thickness) and the six colours. The line you drag out is drawn exactly as it will be saved. Thanks to ghostcrumb.
- "Minimap north up" switch in the legend, for a minimap that stays pointed north instead of turning with you. Thanks to ghostcrumb.
- The legend is split into three groups, On the map, Places and Settings, with a divider between each. Thanks to ghostcrumb.
- Zoom the full map from the keyboard with - and =, as well as the mouse wheel.

Fixes
- The map no longer flashes when you zoom out. Past a certain zoom it kept throwing away the very parts of the map it was about to draw, so patches blinked in and out and the frame rate dropped. Thanks to Xmat5, who tracked it down.
- Ground that changes no longer flashes black on the map while its new picture is on the way. The old picture stays until the new one arrives. Thanks to Xmat5.
- On servers without a website, maps now update when the ground changes. Before, a build or a crater showed up only after you relogged. Thanks to Xmat5.
- Thin and Medium lines were drawn exactly the same width, so there were really only two weights. All three are now visibly different.
- Spruce forests are green again. Spruce and birch leaves took the biome's leaf colour, which in some biomes is a yellow-brown; they now use their own fixed colours, as they do in the game. Ground mapped by an older version is redone as people walk past it. Thanks to ghostcrumb.

Server performance
- The map no longer keeps all of its terrain in memory. Before, every chunk the server had ever mapped stayed in memory until a restart, which after pregenerating a large world came to gigabytes. It now keeps a few dozen areas in memory and reads the rest from disk when needed. /maq perf shows how many are loaded. Thanks to Xmat5.
- A server without a website no longer builds up a queue of map updates it never sends.
- A website that reconnects is sent the map a piece at a time instead of the whole thing at once.

Existing worlds keep their map and are read as before. Each faction's explored area starts empty and fills in as members move about.
