Madman's Dreams

A story-driven addon for Thaumaturge about the price of forbidden knowledge.

A dull ache presses at my temples, and the voices are clearer now. I think I need to sleep.

You have read too much. One night you fall asleep in your own bed and wake up somewhere else: a place that feels familiar, though you have never been there. When you come back, there is a note on your table, written in your own hand.

Madman's Dreams adds a full story chapter to Thaumaturge. Insanity is more than a penalty here: it opens doors, wakes machines and is paid for at the altar. And it never leaves quietly.

✦ The story

• Dreams and rifts. Your research brings on strange nights. Follow the rift out of the dream and into the Underside, a broken world of floating islands, lairs and guarded abodes.
• You are not the first. Find the journals of the Alchemist, the Knight and the Cartographer: three thaumaturges who walked this road before you. Each journal is its own illustrated book, and the last pages are not what you expect.
• Depth. The further you go, the deeper you sink. Each level of Depth gives you new abilities and takes something away. If you go too deep, the world stops looking the same.
• The Abyss, the First Dreamer and the Faceless. Boss fights, a cinematic maze and a finale that asks you one question.
• Codex of Madness. A bestiary and atlas that rewrites itself as you lose your mind. Weaknesses appear after enough encounters, and some pages were written by someone else.

✦ Madness you can feel

• Your hands shake. The camera, your arm and your hotbar tremble during attacks of madness.
• Letters swap places in chat, tooltips and books, and at deep Depth whole words change places.
• Your interface lies to you: an eye looks out of a chest instead of an item, and tooltips say things they shouldn't. Pills of Clarity and the Clear Gaze help, for a while.
• Whispers, hallucinations and nights when the nightmare comes to you.

✦ New aspect: Somnium

Somnium (Spiritus + Tenebrae): sleep, dream, the dreamt. It has its own icon and appears in items, mobs and recipes across the addon.

✦ Awakened devices

Pour Liquid Madness on Thaumaturge's own machines to wake them up:

• Nightmare Crucible: can brew twice, but sends its flux into the alchemist's mind.
• Rift Bore: digs twice as fast and devours what it breaks. Fit it with Bore Lenses to choose what it mines or ignores, and connect it to the Hive with a nerve.
• Infernal Furnace, Infusion Matrix, Arcane Lamp, Arcane Ear and Crossbow Turrets: each one wakes into a nightmare version with its own behaviour.
• Awakened Golems: nightmare golemancy.

✦ Multiblock machines

Assemble them with Liquid Madness, then watch them come together:

• Vis Collector: living tendrils that pull vis out of the air.
• Vis Reservoir: a swirling tank of up to 20,000 vis.
• Dream Forge: remembers any block and dreams up copies of it, built straight into a marked area or poured into a chest.
• Altar of the Bargain: an infusion-style ritual for 7 bargain enchantments. Each gives a strong bonus and takes a price. While the ritual runs, the world sways around you.
• Thinking Vessel, Hive Mind and Archive of the Fourth: a living storage network.
• Vis Pump and Cartographer's Arc Coil: a Tesla coil that runs on Potentia.

Every multiblock shows a 3D layer-by-layer schematic right in the Thaumonomicon.

✦ Gear

• The Whispering Blade line: from the Whispering Blade to the Echo Blade, then one of two paths (the Faceless Blade or the Devourer's Scythe), and finally The Last Dream.
• Armor: the Dreamer's Vestments, the Renegade's Plate and the Regalia of the Fallen.
• Tools: the Devourer's vein pickaxe, feller's axe and 3×3 shovel; Underside tools; the Fallen's Tool.
• Trinkets (Curios): rings, amulets, belts and a heart in a jar.
• Utility: Builder's and Architect's Wands, Dream Mirrors, Key of Sleep, Depth Gauge, Soul and Legion Jars.

✦ Fully integrated

• Everything is learned through the Thaumonomicon in its own research tab. Story entries stay hidden until they happen to you, so there are no spoilers.
• Over 60 research entries, with recipes gated by research stage.
• New spells for Thaumaturge foci: Dread, Whisper, Unweaving and more.
• Every book uses a custom illustrated screen, with a cover in the style of its author.
• Full English and Russian translations.

Requirements

Install it on both the client and the server.

Compatibility notes

• This addon hooks into Thaumaturge's internals, so a big Thaumaturge update can break it until this addon is updated. If the game crashes after a Thaumaturge update, check here for a new version.
• /madmessages screen|chat chooses where the voices speak to you.
