empty liminal places.

kenopsia — the eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that is usually bustling with people, but is now abandoned and quiet.

Kenopsia is an atmospheric horror mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 (Fabric). It is not about monsters around the corner — it is about emptiness: places where people should be, and nobody is. The world takes you back to the Beta era, pulls you into endless liminal spaces and keeps reminding you that you are not alone… or that you are exactly that.

! 41 dimensions — empty halls, corridors, poolrooms, malls, schools, fields and the void. Every place has its own atmosphere and its own ways out. Exits are rare: you have to explore.

! 8 creatures — seven hostile Imprints, each with its own way of hunting, its own voice and its own loot, and faceless red figures that only watch.

! 38 random events — sounds, visions, glitches, strange messages and events that change the world around you.

! 2 endings — an ordinary one and a true one you have to find yourself.

And also:

  • a story pieced together from notes, documents and ciphers;
  • strange structures in the normal world;
  • Beta 1.8 gameplay and terrain, and — if you want — the original Alpha/Beta sounds and textures;
  • original music and sounds;
  • a reduced-flashing mode and settings for every intense effect.

! Content warning !

This mod has sudden sounds, a fake "Connection lost" screen, a camera that may turn by itself and flashing effects (lightning, fast day/night cycles, flickering images). On first launch the mod warns about this and offers a Reduced flashing mode. Every intense effect can be turned off in the settings.

! Settings

Open them from Mod Menu (optional) or with the client command /kenopsia-settings. The file is config/kenopsia.json.

  • World: random events on/off, event frequency, single events off, Imprints, falling through walls, Beta combat, Beta hunger, Beta-only structures.
  • Client: reduced flashing, camera effects, fake disconnect screen, event music vs. the music slider, original Alpha/Beta sounds and textures.

! Original Alpha/Beta sounds and textures

They are not included in the mod file. If you agree (the mod asks on first launch; you can change it in the settings), it downloads them from Mojang's own servers (resources.download.minecraft.net, launcher.mojang.com, about 2.5 MB) and checks every file by SHA-1 — the same way the official launcher downloads old versions. Without your consent nothing is downloaded.

! Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric Loader 0.19.5+, Fabric API.
  • Included, no separate install: GeckoLib, Moderner Beta.
  • Optional: Mod Menu (settings button).
  • Needed on the server and on every client.

! Commands (operators)

  • /kenopsia event <id> [players] — start any event.
  • /kenopsia go <dimension|home> [players] — travel to a dimension.
  • /kenopsia ruin <structure> — place a structure in front of you.
