The Ottoman Update

Janissaries, wanderers and old crafts

  • Janissaries: give a grown villager a börk and they join the corps, with a pala bıyık and arched brows. Give them vanilla weapons, shields and armour, which they wear in Ottoman designs.
  • Ranks: janissaries rise from Acemi to Yeniçeri to Serdengeçti through their kills, growing stronger, and archers shoot better. The çorbacı is a separate villager who strengthens those nearby.
  • Banners and guard posts: a banner makes a standard-bearer, and a band of up to twelve follows while you hold that banner or a shield made with it. Plant it and they guard the ground. In villages they guard by night and sleep by day.
  • The horn: blow a goat horn and every janissary near you wakes, chants and charges.
  • Crescent nights: on the two crescent moon phases janissaries hit harder, move faster and heal quickly.
  • Healing at the usta: wounded janissaries walk to the nearest usta and eat.
  • The travelling aşık: a white-bearded saz player who plays his own tunes and brings a discount to the village.
  • Nasreddin Hoca: he rides his donkey backwards and sets riddles. Bring the answer in your hand for a strange reward. Bring the wrong thing and you are struck down, whatever you wear.
  • Crafts: paint çini tiles and marble ebru in a tray.
  • Food: hamsi from the sea, hamsi tava in the copper pan, balık ekmek, and Anzer honey from hives high in the mountains. Fish markets appear in villages.
  • Shepherd dogs: Kangals and Malaklıs guard flocks, and spiked collars keep them safe.
  • Historic banner patterns: Crescent and Star, Three Crescents, Zülfikâr, the Seljuk eagle and star, the Kayı tamga, Timur's rings, Bozkurt and the Orkhon runes.
  • Recipes: every recipe now joins the recipe book, and many were corrected: the Anzer hive no longer hides the beehive recipe, the kebab grill no longer needs Nether magma, and Adana, şiş, lahmacun and pide take beef or lamb.
  • New tree shapes: walnuts are tall with high crowns, pistachios low and forked, pomegranates shrubby on several stems, and lemons small and round. Olive, lemon, pomegranate, pistachio and walnut leaves fall in their own colours, with petals from blossom.
  • The usta's döner stays his: villagers no longer take the slices he cuts, though they can still take what you cut or drop.
  • The kervansaray: a rare Seljuk han in desert, plains and savanna, with Seljuk star and knot stones for your own building.

Soups and more

  • The copper cauldron and eight Turkish soups: craft a copper cauldron, set it over a lit campfire or mangal (or fire, lava or magma), pour in a bucket of water and add a soup's ingredients. It simmers into soup only while there is heat right underneath, then a bowl ladles out three servings. Right-click it with an empty hand to see what each soup needs. The soups: mercimek (red lentil), ezogelin, yayla (yogurt and rice), tarhana, domates (tomato), işkembe (tripe), düğün (wedding soup) and şehriyeli tavuk (chicken with şehriye).
  • New ingredients: red lentils and rice to farm, mint growing wild, tarhana, vinegar, tripe and şehriye.
  • What the soups do: mercimek keeps you warm, so powder snow can't freeze you for three minutes; yayla mends a little; işkembe settles nausea; chicken soup with şehriye clears poison.
  • Lemon on soup: squeeze a lemon over any soup in the crafting grid. It is a little more filling and a lemon wedge sits on the rim.
  • Soup for supper: villagers sitting at a sini in the evening fetch a bowl from a copper cauldron of soup nearby and eat together.
  • More from rice, lentils and lemons: pilav and bulgur pilavı, biber dolması and patlıcan dolması in the copper pan; sütlaç baked in the stone oven; mercimek köftesi shaped by hand; limonata and naneli limonata.
  • Advancements: Soup's On for your first bowl, and Afiyet Olsun for eating all eight soups.
  • The lemon tree: grows wild in the jungle and blossoms white before it hangs with lemons, with a whole wood set.
  • The Kangal and the Malaklı: the Anatolian shepherd dogs, bigger and stronger than wolves, tamed like them. They don't hunt sheep; they go for wolves.
  • The trees look like vanilla's: olive, pomegranate, pistachio and walnut wood and leaves redrawn in vanilla's style.
  • Fixed: a nazar on a sheep or a horse was hidden inside its wool or chest. It now hangs under the jaw of any animal.
