What's new

Kaelo's Content is now Kaelo's Ruinbound

Same mod, new name — every boss here is bound to a ruin, and the name says so now. Your worlds are safe: the mod's internal id has not changed, so every item, block and building carries over as it was.

Remove the old jar when you update. The file is now called kaelos_ruinbound-1.0.7.jar; if kaelos_content-1.0.6.jar is still in your mods folder next to it, the game will refuse to start because the same mod is loaded twice.

The Star Devourer

The fourth boss, and the largest thing in the mod: a serpent of crystal plate some eighteen links long, with a star burning in its mouth. 1000 health, 18 armour, and it flies — it does not walk up to you, it circles, dives and comes round again.

It lives above the Astral Observatory, a new building that generates in plains, meadows, savanna, snowy plains and desert — rarer than the Ruined Forge, so finding one is a journey. Two broken astronomical rings turn in the sky over its floor. The Eye of the Astral Observatory points the way (star tear, amethyst, an astral shard, an eye of ender), and the Star Prism (star tears, an astralium crystal and a tempered ingot), placed beneath the rings, calls it down.

Thirteen attacks, chosen by weight, not in a cycle. The head bites — with a lunge sized to the distance and a follow-up if you dodged the first. The tail lashes the flank and, later, rises like a scorpion's and slams down where you stand. A beam sweeps the floor, a thrown orbit crosses the arena, a trail of stars burns where it flew, rings of a supernova run outward for you to jump, a meteor dive hits the spot you were marked on, comets fall at your heels — and sometimes it bites, keeps you, and carries you into the sky before throwing you down. Hit its head hard enough and it lets go.

Every blow is one beat: the hit, the sound, the shake and the light land on the same tick, so what hit you is never in doubt. It watches you while it flies — the head turns to follow — and heavy blows go through a raised shield, knocking it out of your hands for five seconds.

Half health is an event, not a number. The Devourer roars, lightning runs between its links and down from the rings, and a storm of falling stars covers the arena while it cannot be hurt. After it: the Constellation — a five-pointed figure drawn on the floor star by star, ignited all at once. Every miss fills a bar of rage; full, it answers at once. Below a fifth of its health it stops holding back.

It does not simply fall over. The rings pull it up, it comes apart link by link into the sky, collapses into a star — and the star falls, cracks the floor and stands there as a crystal until it shatters, and that is where the loot is: an astral core, astralium crystals and star tears.

The fight scales: +50 % health for every extra player in the arena.

The Void Tear and the rift

The Void Elemental has a place now. The Void Tear is a new building — a bowl sunk into the ground with an altar at the bottom — and the Rift Anchor works there and only there. Place it on the altar and the rift opens in three waves: shard crawlers first, then a distorted guardian, a void seeker and a rift singer that shields the others with her song (strike her before she finishes and it breaks), and last the Rift Warden — a mini-boss with a stone spear, orbiting stones and a grab. Only then does the Elemental come.

The bowl cannot be broken while the fight is on, nothing else spawns inside it, and the altar burns only while the rift is open.

The Elemental learned three new moves, all of them still asking the one question the fight is built on — are you at a rift?

  • Inhale (from the second phase): he draws everyone who is not at a rift in towards him — and breathes out as the shockwave. Stand in a rift, or run.
  • Backlash: the window on his bare core no longer just ends. Whoever hit him from close up sees a ring closing in for the last second and a half, and the core slams shut on anyone who stayed.
  • Eclipse (third phase): his core goes dark and three beams sweep the bowl like a lighthouse. The only shelter is right beneath him — or inside an open rift, the ones you have spent the whole fight closing. Close every rift during it and the core opens anyway.

His shockwaves now break a raised shield, and he has fight music too.

The Last Oath Smith, hotter

White Hot. At a quarter of his health the forge flares a second time. He cannot be hurt until it has, and after it he fights faster: shorter pauses, cooldowns that melt twice as quick, a sweep that may be chased at once by an overhead slam.

Both of his transitions end in a blast that throws you back and leaves a ring of molten cracks around him — the arena changes with the phase. His attacks are chosen by weight with their own cooldowns now, not in a fixed order, and his overhead slams and the heavy last blow of his combo break a raised shield.

He dies properly: the last blow of his hammer cracks the floor, the forge in his chest goes out in a column of embers and he crumbles to ash. He also drops 3–5 tempered ingots now.

Kaelo has a new body

A new model, built for the fight rather than borrowed from the player's skeleton: plate armour, a cape, and every animation rewritten for it. His phase changes are events too — he cannot be hurt while the next act begins.

A ladder of cores

Every boss core, and the heart essence, can now be crafted the long way — the boss is simply the quicker road. The Legacy Core takes three of them (astral, void and draconic) with a heart essence and legacy materials, and the Fallen Sigil that calls Kaelo now needs a Legacy Core.

The Oath Forge forges Oath Seals from two tempered ingots and a flame essence. A seal on a smithing table fuses a pair of blades into one:

  • Noonvow — Dawnvow and Sunflare
  • Deepwarden — Duskvow and the Oathwarden
  • Eclipse — Nightfall and the Voidreaver
  • Tempest — Skysplitter and Stormward

A fused blade carries both halves' effects on every hit with the other hand free — for a shield, or for nothing at all — and keeps the enchantments of both. The Oathwarden is two-handed, so for it this was the only way to have a pair.

Every boss, the same rules

  • Control effects do not stick to bosses — levitation, slowness, weakness, blindness and the like. Damage over time still works.
  • Screen shake and a rising rumble before the heaviest blows, on every boss.
  • Their own voices: the Devourer roars, hurts and dies with its own sounds, the Smith roars and dies with his, and heavy impacts, swings, shockwaves and shield breaks share one library of new sounds across all bosses.
  • The Ruined Forge stays dry. A forge that generated over groundwater used to flood its boss hall. The hall now dries itself the first time it loads — forges already in your world included.
  • The Oath Seal says where it comes from: right-click the Oath Forge with two tempered ingots and a flame essence in your inventory.
  • Fight music that silences the background music while it plays.

Plays nicely with L_Ender's Cataclysm

The Astral Observatory and the Void Tear share biomes with Cataclysm's Frosted Prison and Cursed Pyramid, and the two could generate on top of each other and cut one another in half. Cataclysm's own spacing rule now keeps its buildings ten chunks clear of ours (new chunks only).

A config file

config/kaelos_content-common.toml:

  • health and damage multipliers for each boss (Star Devourer, Last Oath Smith, Void Elemental, Kaelo, Rift Warden);
  • the Devourer's extra health per player;
  • shield breaking and boss effect immunity, each on or off.

Retired: the Drakeguard armour

The set has left the ladder — it nearly duplicated the Draconic plate. It can no longer be crafted and is gone from the creative tab, but pieces you already own stay and keep working.
