What's new

A Draconic Great Axe

The first axe in the mod, and it fights like one. Four attacks — two horizontal slashes, a thrust and an overhead slam — rather than the spin its preset would otherwise have handed it, and every one of them names its own sound.

Two-handed, so carrying it costs you the offhand entirely. That is the real price: at 34 damage it sits just above the middle of the mod's blades, which is what giving up a shield should buy, and below the ones that also have an ability — Valthera's Legacy at 36, the Abyssal Shard at 38, the Oathwarden at 42. Fire-resistant, like the rest of the draconic tier.

Two advancements for the Void Elemental

Tear It Open is granted for actually summoning him, not for holding the anchor that does it — an anchor can be crafted and left in a chest, and a row that ticks itself for someone who never called anything is not worth having.

Nothing Left to Hold It is the kill.

He moves when he winds up

He always telegraphed — a ring on the ground before the shove, a line drawn to you before the bolt — but he himself hung motionless while it happened. A warning under your feet with a still source reads as a trap in the floor rather than as something he is doing.

  • Repulse gathers. His rings draw inward and spin up as the blow approaches, then fly open at the moment it lands, so the wave racing outward is the end of a gesture you watched him make.
  • The Gaze aims. His three rings tip out of their crossed tilts into a single plane and the shards on his core fold toward the axis. A splayed core says here I am; a folded one says at you.
  • His core no longer snaps open. It flicks — five ticks, overshooting and settling back. Closing is slower and has no overshoot, because opening is the reward for shutting a rift and closing is only the end of the window.

And the rings turn smoothly now. The spin-up was scaling the accumulated angle by a rising multiplier, which after a thousand ticks meant a jump of twenty radians in a single frame — the rings were not accelerating, they were teleporting. Time accumulates instead, and everything read off the network is interpolated between frames.

Two sounds of his own

The wind-up is a rising hum exactly as long as the wind-up itself, and it starts almost inaudible on purpose: it repeats every four to seven seconds for the whole fight, and a sharp attack at the front of it would wear out faster than the boss does.

The open core is eight seconds long and fades as it goes. The window is exactly eight seconds, so the sound is a timer you can hear: how much striking time is left, without looking away from him.

Five rings instead of three

Three read as an armillary sphere but had nothing between them and nothing beyond. The two new ones are deliberately not more of the same — one tight and fast inside, one wide and slow outside. Small things move quickly and large things slowly, which is how an eye reads depth rather than clutter. His hitbox went from five blocks wide to six to match the outer ring, because a box that does not agree with what you see is a box you swing through.
