Custom Minecraft Mod Licence — CurseForge Edition
Licence version: 1.3
Mod name: [Item tracer]
Original author: [Peakwarrior]
Official project page: [https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/item-tracer]
Effective date: [29/10/26]
1. Copyright and Ownership
1.1. This licence applies to the original Minecraft mod identified above (the "Mod"), including its original source code, compiled files, assets, documentation and other materials, except for components owned by third parties.
1.2. The original author retains ownership of the Mod and all rights not expressly granted by this licence.
1.3. Downloading, installing, using, modifying or distributing the Mod does not transfer ownership of the original work.
1.4. This licence applies only to materials the original author has the legal right to license. Third-party components remain subject to their own applicable licences.
2. Private Use
2.1. You may download, install, run and privately modify the Mod for personal use without obtaining additional permission.
2.2. No attribution, credit, link or public acknowledgement is required for private use, provided the Mod or a modified version is not shared, distributed, published, sold or otherwise made available to another person.
2.3. Private use includes modifying the Mod for your own Minecraft installation or using it on a server you operate, provided the files are not distributed to other people.
2.4. Private-use permission does not grant permission to publish, sell, rehost or redistribute the Mod except as expressly permitted by this licence.
3. Server Use and Distribution to Players
3.1. You may operate a Minecraft server using the Mod, including a server that generates revenue, subject to this licence.
3.2. You may provide the original or a modified version directly to players who need it to connect to or use your server, provided that you:
- Credit the original author using the username stated above.
- Include a link to the official project page stated above.
- Identify the version as modified if changes have been made.
- Do not charge a separate fee specifically for the Mod or its files.
- Comply with the other applicable terms of this licence.
3.3. You may charge for server access, memberships, subscriptions or other server services, and may accept donations, provided these arrangements are not used to sell the Mod files or circumvent this licence.
3.4. Players receiving the Mod through this section may use it for the relevant server. They do not automatically receive permission to republish, sell or redistribute it elsewhere.
3.5. Server operators must not present the Mod as their own creation or imply that the original author endorses their server or modifications.
4. Server-Specific Modifications
4.1. You may modify the Mod for use on a server you operate, subject to applicable third-party licences.
4.2. You may distribute those server-specific modifications directly to players of that server under Section 3.
4.3. When providing a modified version to players, you must credit the original author, link to the official project page, identify the version as modified and identify the modifier or server responsible where reasonably possible.
4.4. Permission to modify the Mod for your own server does not automatically permit you to publish the modified version for general public download.
4.5. Server-specific modification rights must not be used as a pretext to distribute an essentially unchanged copy of the Mod publicly.
5. Modpacks and Platform Distribution
5.1. The original author expressly permits the Mod to be included and redistributed as part of a Minecraft modpack, subject to this section.
5.2. This permission covers public and private modpacks, including modpacks distributed through CurseForge, where the applicable platform permits the distribution method.
5.3. Modpack creators may include the original, unmodified Mod file inside a modpack archive, including an "overrides" folder, where that method is permitted by the relevant platform. This is an express exception to the standalone redistribution restrictions in Section 7.
5.4. For distribution of the Mod as part of a modpack under this section, attribution to the original author is the only additional condition imposed by this licence. A separate link to the official project page is not required by this licence for this specific use. The pack may credit the author in its description, credits list or another reasonable location.
5.5. Modpack creators do not need to obtain separate written permission from the original author for a use already permitted by this section. However, platform approval, listing requirements and other platform rules still apply.
5.6. Where the Mod is hosted on CurseForge, creators should reference it through the official modpack manifest or another platform-approved method rather than bundling the hosted file directly where the platform prohibits that practice.
5.7. This permission does not authorise standalone reuploads of the Mod to unrelated mod-sharing websites, or the sale of the Mod as a separate product. The permission to include the Mod in a pack does not transfer ownership.
5.8. Modpack creators must not claim ownership of the Mod or falsely imply that the original author created, sponsors or endorses their modpack.
5.9. This section does not override third-party licences, applicable law or platform policies. Where a platform requires an approval process, the Mod must be approved before distribution through the relevant method.
6. Public Distribution of Modified Forks
6.1. You may publicly distribute a modified fork only if it contains substantial, meaningful changes that materially alter or extend the original Mod's functionality, implementation or purpose.
6.2. The following, on their own, do not qualify as substantial modifications:
- Renaming the Mod or its files.
- Changing the icon, description, metadata or branding.
- Repackaging or recompiling the original without meaningful changes.
- Making only trivial code edits.
- Changing configuration values or default settings alone.
- Making cosmetic changes that do not materially alter the Mod.
- Combining an otherwise unchanged copy with other mods or files.
6.3. Any publicly distributed modified fork must:
- Clearly identify itself as an unofficial modified version or fork.
- Credit the original author.
- Link to the official project page.
- Describe the significant modifications made.
- Identify the fork's maintainer or modifier.
- Avoid falsely implying endorsement or official status.
- Comply with applicable third-party licences.
6.4. You must not distribute the original, unmodified Mod as a separate standalone download under the guise of distributing a modified fork.
6.5. Permission to publish a qualifying modified fork does not grant permission to sell or independently rehost the original Mod files. Section 5 remains a separate permission for modpack distribution.
7. Prohibited Selling, Reuploads and Redistribution
7.1. You must not sell, license for a fee or charge specifically for access to the original Mod files or an essentially unchanged copy, except where the original author has granted separate written permission.
7.2. You must not upload, mirror, rehost or redistribute the original unmodified Mod as a standalone download on another mod-sharing website, file-hosting service, marketplace, storefront or distribution platform without prior written permission from the original author.
7.3. These restrictions also apply where the files are distributed through another account, renamed, repackaged, placed behind a payment, membership or subscription requirement, or bundled with unrelated content to circumvent the licence.
7.4. The server distribution and modpack permissions expressly granted by this licence are limited exceptions. They do not grant general permission to rehost or sell the original files.
7.5. Any additional permission must be granted in writing by the original author.
8. Attribution and Branding
8.1. Private use: No attribution, credit, link or public acknowledgement is required where the conditions of Section 2 are met.
8.2. General sharing and distribution: When sharing or distributing the Mod or a modified version under an exception permitted by this licence, you must credit the original author and include a link to the official project page, except where Section 5 expressly provides otherwise.
8.3. Commercial server use: If the Mod is used on a server that generates revenue through paid access, subscriptions, memberships, donations or other monetisation, the server operator must credit the original author and provide the official project link in a reasonably visible location, such as the server website or relevant information page.
8.4. Modified versions: Publicly distributed modified forks must identify the original author and modifier, describe the changes made and link to the original project, subject to the specific modpack exception in Section 5.
8.5. Attribution must not falsely suggest that the original author created, approved, sponsors or endorses a third-party server, modpack or fork.
8.6. This licence does not grant permission to use the original author's name, logos or branding in a misleading manner.
9. Third-Party Components
9.1. The Mod may contain or interact with code, libraries, assets or other components owned by third parties.
9.2. Those components remain subject to their own licences and terms. This licence does not override them.
9.3. Anyone modifying or redistributing the Mod is responsible for checking and complying with applicable third-party licences.
9.4. Where a third-party licence conflicts with this licence, the third-party licence governs that component to the extent of the conflict. This does not grant additional rights over the original author's own work.
10. No Transfer of Ownership
10.1. Except where expressly permitted by this licence, you may not grant another person broader rights to the Mod than you have received.
10.2. Permission to provide the Mod to server players, distribute a qualifying modified fork or include the Mod in a modpack does not transfer ownership of the original Mod.
10.3. Recipients must comply with the applicable terms governing any use or distribution not expressly permitted by this licence.
11. Termination
11.1. Permission under this licence terminates automatically if you materially breach its terms.
11.2. Following termination, you must stop the activity that breaches the licence and cease any use or distribution that is no longer authorised.
11.3. Termination does not prevent the original author from pursuing remedies available under applicable law.
11.4. Where permitted by law, permission may be reinstated if the breach is remedied and the original author confirms reinstatement in writing.
12. Disclaimer of Warranty and Liability
12.1. The Mod is provided "as is" and "as available", to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
12.2. The original author does not guarantee that the Mod will be error-free, secure, compatible with every Minecraft version or mod, or suitable for a particular purpose.
12.3. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the original author is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost data, corrupted worlds, server downtime or other damage arising from use of the Mod.
12.4. Nothing in this licence excludes or limits liability where such exclusion or limitation would be unlawful.
13. Changes to the Licence
13.1. The original author may publish a new licence version for future releases of the Mod.
13.2. Unless expressly agreed otherwise, a new licence version does not automatically change the terms applicable to copies already obtained under an earlier version.
13.3. Each release should identify the licence version that applies to it.
13.4. No change to this licence grants a third party permission to disregard the terms applicable to an earlier copy unless the original author expressly agrees.
14. Applicable Law and Interpretation
14.1. This licence is intended to be interpreted in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, where legally applicable.
14.2. Nothing in this licence removes rights or protections that cannot lawfully be excluded.
14.3. If any provision is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent legally possible.
14.4. This licence is a general template and is not legal advice. Its enforceability depends on the facts and applicable law.
15. Licence Status and Permissions
15.1. This is a custom licence. It is not a Creative Commons licence, MIT licence, GNU General Public License or other standard open-source licence.
15.2. You may exercise only the permissions expressly granted in this document.
15.3. Any rights not expressly granted are reserved to the original author, subject to applicable law and third-party rights.
15.4. Requests for additional permissions, exceptions or broader distribution rights must be approved in writing by the original author.
