Smart Inventory adds the quality-of-life tools every Minecraft player ends up wishing for: one-click sorting, move-everything buttons, an instant search bar, shulker box previews and smarter tooltips. It is lightweight, fully configurable, and works with vanilla chests, barrels, shulker boxes and modded storage out of the box.

Features
Sort in one click
- Buttons above the container and above your inventory, or press S over any area, or middle-click a slot.
- Five sort modes - Category (weapons, tools, armor, food, potions, books, blocks, other), Name, Count, Mod and Registry ID. Right-click the sort button to switch.
- Partial stacks are merged automatically.
- Your hotbar is left alone unless you choose otherwise.
- Safe by design: the sort is simulated first. If an item would not fit or a count would change, nothing is touched.
Move everything
- Deposit all - empty your inventory into the chest.
- Deposit matching - only put in what the chest already has. Perfect for organised storage rooms.
- Take all - loot a chest instantly.
- Take matching - top up only the items you already carry (bind a key).
- Uses each menu's own shift-click rules, so special slots stay safe.
Instant search
- Click the bar or press Ctrl+F and type. Non-matching slots dim, matching slots get a golden outline.

Shulker box preview
Hover any shulker box (or chest / barrel item holding items) and see its contents as a dye-tinted grid. No more opening ten boxes to find your redstone. Choose compact rows, or show it only while holding Shift.
Smarter tooltips
- Durability with a green / yellow / red code.
- Food - hunger and saturation restored.
- Fuel - how many items it smelts.
Lock slots
Hold Alt and click a slot to lock it. Locked slots are ignored by sort and deposit, so your elytra, totem and shulker always stay put. Saved between sessions.
Auto-refill
The last block, food item or throwable in your hand is automatically replaced from your inventory, and a tool that just broke is swapped for another of the same kind. Do not like it? Type /smartinventory refill false. Server owners can disable it for everyone.

Configuration
Everything can be tuned.
smartinventory-client.toml- buttons and offsets, sort mode, search behaviour, dimming strength, every tooltip, preview style.smartinventory-server.toml(per world) - enable or disable sort, move-all and auto-refill, hotbar rules, treat modded menus as containers, menu blacklist.
Compatibility
- Minecraft 1.20.1 - Forge 47.x. More versions and loaders are planned.
- Works with vanilla chests, trapped chests, barrels, ender chests, shulker boxes, hoppers, dispensers and most modded storage that uses plain slots.
- Vanilla machines (furnace, crafting table, anvil, enchanting table, brewing stand, villagers...) are never touched.
- Install on both client and server for everything. Client only: search, tooltips and shulker preview. Server only: auto-refill, plus sorting for players who have the mod. The mod never prevents you from joining a server.
- Safe to add to or remove from an existing world and to include in modpacks (MIT license).
FAQ
The buttons do not show up. Sort and move buttons only appear when the server has the mod. In singleplayer it always does.
Can I use it in my modpack? Yes, no need to ask. A mention is appreciated.
Does it work with other inventory mods? It is designed to coexist. Use the button offsets in the client config if two mods draw in the same spot.
A modded machine shows the buttons. Add its menu id to menuBlacklist in the server config, or set moddedContainers = false.
I found a bug / have an idea. Open an issue on the issue tracker or leave a comment, with your latest.log if it is a crash.
