Description

Herobrine: Hardcore

A co-op horror run for an evening with friends. The world is not empty: something is watching you.

Herobrine: Hardcore turns an ordinary world into one frightening evening-long run. You survive, explore strange buildings, solve the puzzle rooms of the Dungeons and assemble a seal to summon Herobrine to a fight.

And all this time he is near. At first he only watches. Then he writes to you by name. Then he locks the doors.

Built for a group of 2–6 players, but playable solo. A run from the first step to defeating the boss takes about 2–3 hours. A long campaign mode measured in in-game days is also available.

How a run goes

The world lives on a timer. The current phase and the time until the next one are shown at the top of the screen.

I · Traces. Strange buildings, signs, traps. A silence that feels wrong.

II · Presence. He is near. A figure in the distance and behind you, whispers, threats, personal notes.

III · The Hunt. Direct pressure: events come faster and harder, Fury rises, the Shadow arrives.

IV · Ritual. The night thickens. Time to assemble the seal and go to the altar.

The longer you wait, the worse it gets. If everyone dies, the world gains the Mark and turns crueler.

What awaits you

Buildings you should not trust

Dozens of strange buildings stand in rings around spawn: huts, crypts, wells, chapels, towers, ruins. The farther from spawn, the more dangerous.

Regular game structures are turned off, only villages stay. Everything you find was made by him.

Locking traps

A cosy house, a warm fireplace, a bed. You close the door and the exits seal. Then come mob waves, candles going out, fire, a collapsing floor.

Twelve kinds of traps, each with its own way out. Some houses are just houses. You only find out which by stepping inside.

Dungeons and the Citadel

Large underground buildings made of chains of puzzle rooms: rune plates, a room of silence, pitch darkness with a single candle, living statues, code locks, a sacrifice altar, a room for two players and more.

  • One mistake can cost you your life. The clue is always inside the same Dungeon, and a sign at the entrance gives a fair warning.
  • Solutions depend on your world, so answers from the internet will not help.
  • A guardian waits at the end. The reward is personal: each player chooses one gift out of three. You can carry at most two gifts per run, and gifts cannot be dropped or handed over.
  • The Dungeon Sign weakens the final boss.
  • The Citadel is the largest and most dangerous building in the world, with a unique relic.
  • Dungeon walls cannot be broken, blown up or dug around. The only way through is the honest one.

Herobrine is near

  • The Watcher. Only the player he is watching can see him: in a window, around a corner, in a doorway, behind you, by your bed. Your friend next to you sees nothing.
  • Messages. He knows your name, what you are holding and which friend is near. He writes before he appears and after he vanishes.
  • Scares. Doors, footsteps, knocking in the wall, lights going out, a face in the window, a missing item, a double in a reflection. A fear director keeps the rhythm: there is always silence before a strong scare.
  • Visits to your base. Footsteps on the roof, a knock at the door, a sign on the fence, footprints at the threshold. Home stops being safe.
  • Sound. The hum of the Dungeons, a heartbeat, breathing nearby, false sounds when your sanity drops.

Sanity and Fury

Darkness, solitude and fear wear down your sanity: hallucinations begin, and sounds that are not there. Light and friends restore it.

The world's Fury grows over time and after every death, and Herobrine becomes bolder.

Death is not the end (almost)

A fallen player leaves a body with all their items and becomes a ghost bound to it. Friends can bring them back with a candle of return before the body crumbles, and the items go back to their owner.

Returns per world are limited, so every death matters.

The ritual and the boss

The Herobrine Seal is assembled from two halves: one is carried by the Shadow mini-boss, the other is hidden in one of the Dungeons. Build the altar, gather everyone and summon him.

The fight has three stages, and every attack is telegraphed by a sound, particles or a sign. The boss grows stronger with the number of players. Victory brings a crown, a relic of your choice and twenty minutes of peace.

And more

  • The Elder's Letter and the Tracker Compass on first join. The compass leads to buildings you have not visited yet.
  • The Book of Crafting with the mod's recipes. New pages unlock as you play.
  • 18 hidden advancements in the "Fear" tab.
  • Group scaling: events, mobs, guardians, trap waves, loot and arena size all adapt to the number of players.
  • "Who's near" HUD: see who is in your group and who has been left alone.

Fear settings

The mod contains sudden loud sounds, flashes and frightening scenes. Each player chooses how scary it gets for them:

  • /herobrine fear off | low | normal | high sets scare strength (default normal);
  • /herobrine fear flash on | off toggles the "face in the window" flashes;
  • the H key hides the mod's HUD.

Not recommended for people sensitive to flashing lights or sudden loud sounds.

Installation

  • Minecraft Java 26.3
  • NeoForge 26.3.0.94 or newer
  • Java 25 on the server and for every player

The mod is required on the server and on every client. No other mods are needed. Put the .jar into the mods folder.

Create a new world. Buildings and the event schedule are planned from the first minute.

Settings appear in the config/ folder after the first launch, and every key has a comment. When you update the mod, the config updates itself and keeps your changes.

For server admins

  • /herobrine watch shows the progress of the run: milestones to the boss, Dungeons, and where and how every player is.
  • /herobrine observe lets you watch the game from the side without affecting it.
  • /herobrine safe on|off pauses Herobrine: he starts nothing on his own.
  • Pacing presets: EVENING (a 2–3 hour evening) and CAMPAIGN (a long game).
  • A separate admin guide contains all recipes and answers. Better not to show it to players.

Compatibility

The mod turns off regular game structures except villages and sets a world border. Mods that add structures or change world generation may not work well with it. Compatibility with other mods has not been tested, a clean setup works best.

If something breaks, attach logs/latest.log to your report.

Status

This is an early beta. Everything core works and passes automated tests, but some mechanics still await testing by real players. Sounds are currently the mod's own synthesized ones and will get better in future versions. Feedback on balance and fear helps a lot.

Planned

Watching friends through their eyes after death, voiced whispers in your ear, proximity voice chat, new mobs and themed buildings, disasters, new boss fight effects. Plans may change.
