Description

 Ground Zero

The bombs fell. The city stayed.

Ground Zero adds a new world type that replaces the Overworld with the remains of a modern civilization after a nuclear war. Endless cities with wide, empty avenues, gutted skyscrapers, impact craters and silence. Between the cities lie scorched farmland, broken highways, mountains and grey seas.

No new mobs and no new blocks: everything is built from vanilla blocks, so it pairs well with your favourite horror, survival or creature mods.

 🏙️ Cities that feel real

Every city is procedurally generated and split into distinct districts, each with its own look:

- Downtown: skyscrapers in many shapes, including stepped Art Deco towers, glass cylinders, twin towers linked by a skybridge, octagonal towers with mechanical floors, ziggurat crowns with spires and offset stacks.
- Old town: brick tenements with fire escapes and rooftop water towers, churches with bell towers, small squares.
- Housing estates: long concrete blocks and residential towers with balconies, standing on overgrown lawns with forgotten playgrounds.
- Commercial streets: shop rows with awnings, shopping malls with skylights, offices, hotels, parking garages and gas stations.
- Suburbs: houses with pitched roofs, modern flat-roof homes, yards with hedges and fences.
- Industrial zones: factories with brick chimneys, warehouses, grain silos.

Streets have cracked asphalt, faded markings, crosswalks, raised sidewalks, broken street lamps and fire hydrants.

 💥 Destruction everywhere

No building escaped the war:

- Impact craters. The closer a building stands to an impact, the worse it looks.
- Sheared skyscrapers: most towers lost their top, with exposed rebar. Some collapsed across the avenues.
- Blown-out façades, shattered windows, burnt floors, collapsed slabs and piles of rubble spilling into the streets.
- Only a few towers still stand tall.

🚪 Explore inside

Buildings are not empty shells:

- real floors with pillars and the remains of furniture;
- cobwebs in dark corners;
- a ladder shaft leading all the way to the roof;
- every building has at least one way in.

Ruins stay pitch black inside. Bring torches.

 🛣️ Highways

- Elevated highways run above the avenues and link cities across the wasteland.
- Some spans have collapsed into ramps of broken concrete, others are blown open by blasts.
- Ladders on some pillars let you climb up.

🌾 Beyond the cities

- Huge farmlands: rolling patchwork fields of wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots, sunflowers and pumpkins, separated by hedges and dirt paths, with scarecrows and hay bales. Bomb craters are scattered among the crops.
- Abandoned farms: farmhouse, red barn, silos and a pen where livestock still waits.
- Mountains with snowy peaks, and oceans with sandy beaches.
- Rare trees that still have their leaves, in several species, so you can grow a forest again. Most trees are dead.

⛺ Survivors

- Abandoned survivor camps: a cold campfire, tents, log benches and a barrel with whatever they left behind.
- Very rare settlements behind a wooden palisade, where a handful of villagers still live around a campfire, with small houses, beds, workstations, a small vegetable patch and a bell. Finding one feels like finding hope.

How to use

1. Install the mod.
2. Create a new world and set World Type to Ground Zero.
3. Survive.

On a dedicated server, set `level-type=groundzero:ruins` in `server.properties` before the world is created. Install the mod on both the server and the clients.

The Nether and the End are not changed.

 Compatibility

- Works alongside other mods; it only replaces the Overworld generator.
- Pairs especially well with horror and creature mods, fog or VHS shaders, and survival overhauls.
- The world type has to be chosen at world creation; it can't be added to an existing world.
