Same Minecraft world, gentler mobs.
GentleMobs is a NeoForge mod that changes how vanilla hostile mobs interact with players, creating a more relaxed survival experience without removing mobs, loot, exploration, or progression from the game.
Hostile mobs still spawn normally. They still wander around, make their normal sounds, interact with the world, drop their usual items, and give experience when killed.
They just don't necessarily want to harm you anymore.
This edition supports Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge. Looking for the plugin? Visit GentleMobs for Paper.
Features
- Makes vanilla hostile mobs passive toward players.
- Passive mobs attempt to flee when attacked instead of retaliating.
- Optional Neutral mode lets mobs fight back after being attacked.
- Vanilla mode preserves normal Minecraft behavior.
- Individual behavior overrides for specific mob types.
- Adjustable flee distance, speed, and duration.
- Configurable Neutral combat timeout.
- Special handling for bosses and mobs with unusual AI.
- Normal mob spawning, drops, sounds, and XP remain intact.
- Optional Nether Star and Dragon's Breath recipes.
- Works in NeoForge singleplayer worlds and servers.
Choose your experience
Passive: Hostile mobs do not target players. If a player attacks them, they attempt to flee instead of fighting back. This is the default GentleMobs experience.
Neutral: Hostile mobs ignore players until attacked. Once attacked, they may retaliate normally. Combat can end when they lose their target and expires after a configurable timeout—30 seconds by default.
Vanilla: GentleMobs allows normal Minecraft behavior for that mob. Use this for bosses or anything you want to remain dangerous.
Per-mob control
The global mode controls eligible hostile mobs, but individual mob types can have their own behavior.
For example:
- Zombies set to Passive.
- Creepers set to Neutral.
- Wardens set to Vanilla.
- Other eligible mobs using the global setting.
Make the world as peaceful or dangerous as you want without removing mobs entirely.
Modded mobs remain unchanged by default
GentleMobs uses an explicit list of vanilla hostile mob types. It does not automatically affect every mob added by other mods.
Modded entities—including Cobblemon Pokémon—are excluded by default. You can explicitly opt in a modded mob through its exact entity ID, although custom AI may require additional support.
Full All the Mons and Cobblemon runtime compatibility has not been tested.
Alternative progression recipes
GentleMobs includes optional recipes for:
- Nether Star: four Netherite Ingots, four Wither Skeleton Skulls, and one Soul Sand.
- Dragon's Breath: an Ender Pearl, Popped Chorus Fruit, and a Mundane Potion.
Both recipes can be individually enabled or disabled. They provide another progression path for a gentler playstyle.
For Dragon's Breath, place the Mundane Potion manually if recipe-book autofill leaves it out.

Commands require operator permissions or cheats. Tab completion helps select mobs and modes.

Configuration and installation
Requires Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.249 or a newer 21.1.x patch, and Java 21.
Place the jar in your NeoForge instance or server's mods folder. GentleMobs creates config/gentlemobs.json, where you can adjust behavior, overrides, fleeing, combat timeout, and recipes.
Behavior runs on the server. For multiplayer, GentleMobs is designed to work without requiring the mod on connecting NeoForge clients. For singleplayer, install it in your own instance.
Special mobs
GentleMobs includes dedicated handling for mobs such as the Wither, Ender Dragon, Warden, Ghast, and Zoglin.
Fleeing depends on terrain and each mob's movement abilities. Environmental effects, terrain damage, and some indirect hazards can still occur. Creaking is not present in vanilla Minecraft 1.21.1.
GentleMobs is an ongoing project, with further testing and improvements planned for unusual AI and multiplayer edge cases.
Keep Minecraft survival intact while making its mobs a little more gentle.
