Gathering

Play Magic: The Gathering in Minecraft: real cards, real decks, hidden hands, up to eight at a table.

Play Magic: The Gathering in Minecraft. Build a table, pull up a chair, and play Magic with your friends using real cards: every printing, with its own art and rules text. Your hand stays hidden, up to eight players share one board, and there is no rules engine. You play it the way you would at a kitchen table, and the game log tracks everything.

NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT.

Card data and images come from Scryfall. No card images ship inside this mod; each player's game downloads and caches its own.

Bring your deck

  • Import a decklist from Moxfield, Archidekt, MTG Arena, MTGO or a plain 1 Sol Ring list, or paste an Archidekt link and get your exact printings.
  • Or build one from cards you've opened. Booster packs drop in loot and sell in village card shops, collated from each set's real print sheets. Tear them open, file the cards into a searchable collection (t:elf c:g mv<=3), and build a deck from what you own.
  • Or borrow one. A server can set out loaner decks for anyone who sits down without one.

Play any way you like

  • Every format you'd expect: Commander, Oathbreaker, Duel Commander, Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Premodern, Limited, or free play. Best of one, three or five. A deck check before a formatted game says what isn't legal, and you can play it anyway.
  • Everything the game uses: tapping, life totals, counters of every kind, commander damage and commander tax, tokens and copies, emblems, blank cards you can write on, the dungeons, and dice up to twenty sides, coin flips and the planar die, all rolled by the server and written in the log.
  • Mulligans, scry, surveil, mill, search your library, reveal your hand to one player or the whole table, and Undo for a misclick.
  • No rules engine, ever. The mod moves cards and keeps numbers. It never decides whether a play is legal, just like a real table.

Hidden information that stays hidden

Your hand and the order of your library are yours. A hidden card's identity is never sent to a player who isn't entitled to see it, so a modified client has nothing to read. Shuffles use a seed that is never logged or shown.

Draft, trade, compete

  • Booster drafts for four to eight players, cube drafts, and sealed.
  • Trades with other players, and games played for keeps, but only when everyone at the table agrees.
  • Swiss tournaments from a Scorekeeper's Desk: sign-up, pairings, a round clock, standings, a top-eight cut and prizes.
  • Replays of finished games, step by step.

Made for Minecraft

  • Play on the table itself, with the cards lying on the felt for everyone standing around to watch, or press V for a flat board that fills the screen.
  • Tables, chairs, shop counters, Scorekeeper's Desks, collections and display cases in every wood. Push four tables together for an eight-player game.
  • A six-step lesson teaches the controls, every key can be rebound, and twelve interface looks come built in.
  • With Create on NeoForge: Display Links show a tournament's standings or a table's life totals, and Deployers tear boosters open.

Getting started

  1. Build a table and two chairs, and put a chair at the middle of each long edge.
  2. Get a deck. Sit down and choose Learn the controls; finishing the lesson gives you two starter boosters. On a server that allows it, /gathering import takes a decklist.
  3. Sit down and play. Right-click the chair, pick a format, press Start and choose your deck. Press F1 at the table for every key.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21.1.1+, or Fabric Loader 0.15.11+ with Fabric API
  • On a server, install it on the server and on every player's game, at the same version.
  • An internet connection the first time a card is looked up. A card seen once works offline after that.

For server owners

Settings live in config/gathering-server.toml. By default players collect their cards and only operators can import decklists; /gathering profile imported apply turns it into a server where everyone brings their own decks. The full guide is in the README on GitHub.

AI disclosure

Gathering was developed with substantial help from generative AI. Most of its source code was written with Anthropic's Claude, and a share of its textures, models and design work was produced with Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT, including the project icon, which is a Blender render set up by Claude. All of it was directed, curated and playtested by MeekTheSneak, who maintains the project.
