What's new
ADDED
Instruments. The tectonic model was only reachable through commands before, so
most of it was invisible.
- Seismograph. A placeable station that records earthquakes off its own drum. It
measures the gap between the two wave arrivals and how far the needle swung,
then derives distance and magnitude from those. It is never told where the
quake was, so one station puts the epicentre on a circle and three fix it,
the same way real seismic networks work. Also emits a redstone signal scaled
to local shaking.
- Geologist's Hammer. Names the rock you strike, its class, and how rock of that
class forms, then logs the beds beneath it in metres. Breaks nothing.
- Fault Compass. Strike of the nearest plate boundary, what the two plates are
doing across it, and whether it is locked or creeping.
Earthquake early warning. A quake is detected ten seconds before the ground
moves. Seismographs sound a siren and hold a redstone signal through the window,
then hand off as the shaking arrives. Configurable.
Sounds. Earthquakes rumble, scaled by magnitude (about 20 seconds at M3, a full
minute at M9). Seismographs wail.
Dead ground around hot springs. The sterile halo a spring poisons, fading out
into the countryside, with bleached standing dead trees in it.
Rift shoulders and a wider subduction arc. Rifts now raise ground on both sides
of the graben, and the uplifted side of a subduction margin reaches inland about
as far as the trench side reaches out, which is what actually happens.
FIXED
Volcanoes
- The basalt wall standing apart from the mountain with a strip of soil between
it and the cone. Two separate causes: the cone stopped short of where the
apron was told to begin, and the apron started at its thickest. Measured on a
stratocone, a gap on 360 of 360 bearings, up to 5 blocks wide. Now none.
- A second wall, from boundary rock reaching the surface and stopping at a hard
chunk-aligned edge. It now fades under the soil as the fault weakens.
- Craters with almost no lava. The cooling sweep protected intended lava with a
radius, which is the wrong shape for a caldera's crescent lake or a fissure's
line of ponds, so most of it turned to basalt after the first eruption.
Stratocone pools went from 13 cells to 81.
- Flank vents were never carved at all. The check demanded flat ground, and a
volcano flank is not flat. They cut their own bench now, and smoke, spit, and
steam where lava meets water.
- Bare leafless trunks left standing around the footprint.
- Basalt spread under standing forest, 31 blocks past the clearing.
Hot springs
- A spring beside the sea drained it. The basin was being cut below sea level,
so the ocean ran into it. Springs now refuse to cut at or below the waterline,
or anywhere near standing water.
- Pools came out part full. On rough ground only 55 to 71 percent of the basin
held water. It is levelled now rather than hunted for, giving 89 to 100.
- Only the first pool of a terraced chain was warm, so the rest gave no
regeneration. Every terrace has its own bed now.
- Pools roofed over by their own ground, so the water was there but invisible.
- Microbial band order corrected: sinter, green, yellow, orange, brown outward,
matching a real spring.
Earthquakes
- Ice shelves, soil rafts, and the trees standing on them hung in mid-air after
a rupture. The settling pass was treating a floating slab as the ground.
- Hanging bodies of water were left suspended.
- Leaves that lost their tree never decayed.
- A convergent margin could drop the side the previous quake had lifted.
- A 15 second server freeze at the end of a large quake.
- Ground in chunks that were unloaded at the time was never settled.
- The rumble never played at all.
Geysers
- Endless water. A geyser kept flooding after it finished erupting.
- Floating pools and half-trees left over the vent.
Servers and performance
- The mod could not load at all on some setups, a registration conflict on the
hammer. This one took the whole mod down at launch.
- Retrogen did nothing on a dedicated server with no players online, and the
queue grew without bound.
- The mod was spending the same tick budget five times over, up to 32 ms of a
20 ms tick. One shared 5 ms budget now, drawn down by priority.
- A quake half-applied when a world closed could write into the next world
loaded in the same session.
CHANGED
- Config moved to <world>/serverconfig/. Settings now travel with the world and
the server is authoritative, sent to clients on join. Put a tuned file in
defaultconfigs/ to seed every new world. Existing config files will not carry
over.
- Unsupported ground falls, builds included. Nothing is destroyed, a stack is
set back down on the new ground and keeps its blocks, but the old "player
placed blocks are never broken" promise no longer describes what happens.
Both this and whether quakes may deform builds at all are config toggles.
- Eruptions may start fires (on by default, pairs well with fire spread mods).
- Suggests Terralith and Flowing Fluids once on first join.
- All twelve blocks have their own textures. Six were borrowing vanilla ones and
two were indistinguishable in the creative menu.
NOTES
Strongly recommended alongside Terralith and Flowing Fluids. Neither is required.
Existing worlds keep their hot springs and volcanoes as they were generated.
Surface features are only placed once per chunk, so a world that already has
them will not regenerate them in their new form. Deep boundary geology does
update in place.
