What's new

Friends United: Friendly Animals 1.2
New Voices, Animal Personalities & Clearer Care

Friendly Animals 1.2 brings more personality to the existing animal roster with new voices, opossums playing dead, seals resting together, and clearer feeding feedback.

New animal sounds

  • Added dedicated ambient, hurt, and death sounds for penguins, owls, seals, and opossums.
  • Each species receives three ambient variations, two hurt variations, and one death sound.
  • Includes 24 new audio clips across 12 sound events, with matching subtitles.
  • New sounds are original synthesized game effects. Existing animal sounds remain unchanged.

Opossums now play dead

  • Adult and baby opossums can react to nearby threats by lying down and remaining still before recovering.
  • A visible, non-crouching Survival player sprinting within three blocks can trigger the reaction.
  • Nearby visible mobs actively targeting an opossum can also frighten it.
  • The reaction begins only when the opossum is calm and safely on the ground.
  • Playing dead lasts up to 180 game ticks, normally nine seconds, before the recovery animation.
  • A cooldown prevents repeated back-to-back reactions.
  • Damage, interaction, water, lava, fire, losing ground contact, leashing, riding, or entering breeding mode interrupt the behavior.
  • Playing dead does not grant invulnerability or guarantee that an attacker loses interest. Approach carefully and crouch to avoid triggering the player-based fright response.

Seals now rest together

  • Adult seals can seek out a nearby resting adult companion and settle beside it.
  • Seals use normal navigation to find a reachable resting spot with space between animals.
  • Social resting requires safe ground and stops if conditions become unsafe or the companion gets up.
  • A visible, non-crouching Survival player within three blocks can wake a settled seal.
  • A non-crouching player within four blocks prevents an adult seal from starting or continuing its approach to a resting companion.
  • Crouching avoids these new approach reactions. Creative and Spectator players do not trigger them.

Feeding and care improvements

  • Successful healing now displays visible particles, including when feeding capybaras.
  • Added action-bar feedback for relevant healing cooldowns, breeding cooldowns, and situations where an animal does not currently need food.
  • Feeding animation requests now respect the animations supported by each species.
  • Penguins, owls, seals, and opossums no longer receive unsupported eating-animation requests.
  • Resting animals use their supported recovery behavior where appropriate.
  • Corrected seal sleep entry to use its existing settling-to-sleep animation.

Existing care behavior remains intact

  • Species retain their existing diets and breeding foods.
  • Eligible feeding heals up to one heart, with a five-second healing cooldown.
  • Breeding treats can help babies grow or allow eligible adults to breed.
  • Feeding that provides no benefit does not consume an item.
  • Breeding cooldowns and local population protection still apply.
  • Following food remains a temptation behavior. This update does not add taming or a hunger system.

Models and existing features

  • Preserved existing adult and baby models, textures, and animation assets, including the corrected seal eyes.
  • All 13 enabled species remain available: capybara, raccoon, red panda, gundi, brown bear, deer, otter, duck, skunk, penguin, owl, seal, and opossum.
  • Existing flight, swimming, resting, family behavior, natural spawning, and other

Configuration and modpack support

  • Existing per-species enable, natural-spawning, spawn-weight, and group-size settings remain available.
  • The natural-spawn weight multiplier retains its 1.1 default of 2.0.
  • Existing local population protection remains enabled by default: 48 nearby Friendly Animals within a 32-block counting radius. This limits new admissions without deleting existing animals.
  • Disabling a species prevents new animals of that species while preserving saved animals.
  • Disabling only natural spawning leaves spawn eggs and breeding available when the species itself is enabled.
  • Diets remain customizable through datapack item tags.
  • Restart the world or server after changing spawning settings.
  • Playing dead and social resting do not have separate configuration switches in this release.
