FreePaint

An easel for creating pixel art of many different sizes.

MCPaint is a lighthearted painting and decoration mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1, built for NeoForge. It lets players craft an easel, prepare paint, and create their own persistent pixel artwork inside Minecraft—no resource pack or external image editor required.

Players begin by crafting an easel and choosing from Small, Medium, or Large Canvases. A canvas is mounted on the easel and edited through an in-game painting interface. Canvas dimensions can be selected in 16-pixel increments, allowing anything from small decorative pieces to large, multi-block paintings.

The mod currently includes:

  • Sixteen paint colors based on Minecraft’s standard dye palette.
  • Paint brewed from dyes and Thick Water.
  • Reusable paint tubes that can supply multiple easels.
  • Four paintbrush sizes, ranging from a one-pixel detail brush to a large-area brush.
  • Circle and Triangle Stencils that permanently unlock shaped brush options on an easel.
  • A Paint Bucket upgrade that unlocks a contiguous-region Fill Tool.
  • Right-click erasing and transparent canvas areas.
  • Persistent artwork that survives being removed, carried, and placed again.
  • Paintings that can be returned to an easel for further editing.
  • Configurable rectangular canvases up to 80×80 pixels.
  • Large paintings that occupy multiple wall blocks.
  • Custom painting names displayed when a player looks at the hanging artwork.
  • Thirty-six advancements named after classical painters, awarded for discovering the different paints, paint tubes, and brushes.

Easels act as personal little art stations. Paint colors, stencils, and the Fill Tool are installed directly into an easel, giving players a reason to build and improve their studio over time. Installed upgrades belong to that particular easel, while completed paintings remain portable.

The mod supports both single-player and multiplayer. Painting data is stored and synchronized by the mod so that players on a server can create artwork, exchange paintings, display them in galleries, and—with appropriate dramatic flair—stand around critiquing one another’s use of lime paint.

Rembrandt is focused specifically on canvas-based pixel artwork rather than repainting ordinary Minecraft blocks or importing external images. Everything is created by the player through the in-game editor using the mod’s paints and tools.
