Description

Fragile Life replaces "a number of hearts" with a body.

Every hit lands somewhere. Seventeen body regions take cuts, lacerations, bruises, sprains, fractures, burns, concussions and internal bleeding. Each injury behaves in its own way: it bleeds, hurts, gets dirty, gets infected and heals over time. Your hearts always follow the state of the body.

Treat yourself and others

  • Press R for the medical screen: vital signs, a 3-D anatomy view (skin, bones, muscles, organs) and every injury with what helps it.
  • Treatments are short, hands-on mini-games:
    • wrap a bandage around the limb by circling it with the mouse;
    • line up a splint;
    • clean a wound;
    • scan for hidden injuries;
    • keep a rhythm to stabilise someone in a crisis.
  • Bandage rolls are used a wrap at a time: stop early and the rest stays on the roll.
  • All supplies are crafted from ordinary materials (a bandage is just wool). The Recipes button in the medical screen shows every recipe as a crafting grid, and the recipe book unlocks each one as soon as you hold an ingredient.

A body that reacts

  • Stamina, breathlessness, fatigue, thirst and sleepiness.
  • Mining and sprinting tire you; push-ups (J) and squats (K) train endurance and strength.
  • Limping on a broken leg, guarding a hurt arm, stumbling when your balance is poor.
  • Heavy blows can knock you out; an articulated ragdoll falls and gets up again.
  • Simple illnesses: a cold from cold, wet and exhaustion, and a stomach illness from spoiled food. Fever shows on a real body temperature.
  • Dressings, splints and bruises are visible on your character to other players.

Readable

  • A compact lower-left HUD: a medical button and round condition icons, most urgent first.
  • Open chat and hover an icon for an explanation.
  • English and Russian. Colour-blind patterns, reduced motion and accessibility options for the mini-games.

Settings

Almost everything can be switched off or scaled, on the server and on the client. Optional limb loss is off by default and never graphic.

Loaders

Minecraft 1.21.1, one file per loader: NeoForge, Forge and Fabric (Fabric needs Fabric API). Install the mod on the server and on every client.

Known limitations in 0.7.1

  • Minecraft 1.21.1 only.
  • On Fabric, settings are edited in config/fragilelife-*.properties (no in-game config screen yet).
  • Two players treating each other over a real network has not been fully tested yet.
  • Prosthetic items are not in the game yet.

The medical mechanics are fictional game rules, not medical advice. Inspired by the systemic approach of Casualties: Unknown. No code, art, sound or interface from that game is used.
