Drum Major

 

The grenadier-drummer in the Imperial Russian Army in 1812 was responsible for relaying commands through standardized drum signals, maintaining marching rhythm, and supporting battlefield coordination.

He also had ceremonial duties, helped enforce camp routine (wake-up, assembly, signals of the day), and in some cases acted as a messenger or aide within the regiment.

During the French invasion of Russia, he was tasked with operating ahead of the main lines, harassing enemy formations, targeting officers or artillery, and using terrain for cover, providing the army with flexibility and precision fire that regular line infantry could not.
