If you want to discover things slowly, talk to villagers and wandering traders along the way. They will gradually guide you toward becoming a true master food vendor while helping you learn the mod naturally.
If you would rather get started quickly and collect all the important dialogue sooner, tips and more guide-like notes are also included further below.
Here’s an important note about how to set up the menu:
The dishes placed inside the barrel next to the flag are the menu. Whatever dishes you put inside, the villagers will order from those dishes.
In a future 1.9.x version, I’ll add support for mod-specific menus. For example, item frames can be placed on all four sides of the barrel. If the item displayed in a frame belongs to a certain mod, villagers will only order dishes from that corresponding mod.
For example, if you place sushi in an item frame on the side of the barrel, villagers will choose other sushi items from the same mod. Or, if you place a Farmer’s Delight knife in the item frame, villagers will order food from Farmer’s Delight.
This also means those limited-time special orders will become orders limited to the selected mod range.

A few things to discover
A tiny table trick
-
Place any wooden pressure plate on top of any fence to turn it into a table.
-
Right-click the pressure plate while holding food to place it on the table, with up to 3 servings per table.
-
Left-click to take back food that has not been claimed by a villager yet.
-
Hold right-click to eat the food placed on the table directly, gaining temporary bonus health and armor based on its deliciousness tier.
-
From time to time, cute cats, dogs, and foxes may come begging for food, and feeding them can unlock unique enchanted books.
A simple banner trick
-
Any green or yellow banner, whether standing or wall-mounted, can be used as a shop flag.
-
Right-click it once to register it as your shop flag.
-
After that, each right-click toggles the shop between open and closed, while also changing the banner color to match.
Hungry visitors
-
When the shop is open, the flag draws nearby hungry villagers over and guides them toward empty seats to wait for food.
-
Villagers without an open seat will wait near the flag first.
-
Once seated, each villager customer chooses a dish from the available menu.
-
Every so often, special customers may ask for unusual dishes or more demanding meals that need to be prepared on the spot, giving you more experience in return.
-
If you serve the correct food in time, the villager eats, recovers energy, pays you in emeralds and experience, and leaves satisfied.
-
Of course, some foods may not suit a villager’s taste, which means you may get no emeralds or experience at all.
-
At night, villagers return home.
What happens after the meal
-
After eating, customers give a star rating.
-
High ratings can double your emerald and experience rewards.
-
Food tiers are assigned automatically based on cooking difficulty, and even modded foods that are not listed individually still receive a reasonable default tier.
-
Animal customers, special dishes, enchanted book rewards, and helper-related progression are all part of the full gameplay loop.
The legendary food merchant
-
This unusual wandering trader may occasionally show up because of good food.
-
If you want to make more advanced dishes, you may be able to find some special help from him.
-
He also has a chance to sell helpers who travel with him, although their price is quite high.
Helpers
-
The nameless helper is always by the legendary food merchant’s side. When he gets too tired to move, the merchant carries him on his back so he can rest.
-
He mainly handles physically demanding work, such as serving dishes to customers and protecting his boss.
-
The little helper is the legendary food merchant’s cheerful companion.
-
He also helps serve customers and is often carried on the merchant’s back as well.
A bell with some actual use
-
Left-click a vanilla bell with a stick to call villagers over.
-
Ring it repeatedly before the timer runs out to attract customers more effectively.
-
If you keep ringing it after the timer ends and the attraction cooldown begins, villagers will find it too noisy and leave.
Version 1.7.5 adds the Recipe system.
Villagers who have given you a 5-star review at least once and have eaten your food at least 5 times can become Regular Customers. Regular Customers will give you a random recipe whenever they leave a 4-star or higher review.
If you combine a recipe with a book, you can create a Food Notebook to view that recipe. If you later combine the Food Notebook with another new recipe, that recipe will be added to the notebook as well.
