Fonix Fire
Fonix Fire is a physics-inspired fire overhaul for Minecraft that replaces the simple vanilla fire effect with a more dynamic and material-aware burning system.
Fire no longer behaves like the same animated block everywhere. Different materials can burn in different ways, with their own visual behavior, spread style and burn progression.
Features
Dynamic fire spread
Fire can spread across surfaces instead of simply appearing as identical vanilla fire blocks.
Surface burn fronts
Fast-burning materials such as grass and carpets can burn through a moving, irregular fire line. Behind the active flame front, the surface is left visibly burned while the fire continues spreading forward.
Long-burning wood
Wood behaves differently from grass and other thin materials. Flames can remain active for longer periods while the material gradually heats up and chars instead of instantly turning black.
Volumetric-looking flames
Wood fires can form larger, denser flames around burning surfaces, giving larger fires more volume and depth.
Progressive charring
Burning wooden surfaces can gradually darken and become charred as the fire continues.
Embers and sparks
Burning areas release glowing embers and small sparks, adding movement and atmosphere to active fires.
Smoke effects
Fire produces smoke that rises above burning surfaces and helps larger fires feel more alive.
Custom fire glow
Fonix Fire uses its own emission and bloom effects to make flames feel bright and hot while keeping the surrounding scene readable.
Material-aware behavior
Not every block is treated the same. Fonix Fire is being designed around the idea that different materials should have different burning characteristics.
Why Fonix Fire?
Vanilla Minecraft fire is mostly a repeated animated texture attached to blocks.
Fonix Fire aims to make fire feel like an actual process:
ignition → spreading → active burning → charring → burned surface
The goal is not to turn Minecraft into a scientific simulator, but to create fire that looks and behaves much more naturally while still fitting Minecraft's block-based world.
Current Status
Fonix Fire is actively being developed.
The fire rendering, surface propagation and material behavior are still being improved, so visuals and mechanics may change between versions.
Dynamic lighting of nearby blocks is not implemented yet. The current glow is a visual screen-space/emission effect.
Compatibility
- Minecraft 1.20.1
- Forge
- Client/server mod
Future Plans
Future versions may expand the material system, improve fire interaction with different block types, add more advanced smoke behavior and continue improving the visual quality and performance of large fires.
If you find a strange fire shape, visual bug or performance problem, feel free to report it with a screenshot and information about the blocks that were burning.
