Fen’s RPG Quests
Give your world characters, stories and a reason to explore.
Fen’s RPG Quests is a quest and dialogue creation mod for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1. Create anything from a village resident with a simple request to a branching adventure with multiple stages, meaningful choices and faction reputation.
Build adventures directly in Minecraft, write reusable JSON templates, or use the online quest constructor.
Wiki & Online Quest Constructor
Open the Quest Constructor
Create an adventure through five guided steps:
- Character — configure your NPC’s identity, appearance and behavior.
- Quests — create objectives, stages, requirements and rewards.
- Dialogue — write conversations and connect player choices to quests.
- Playtest — rehearse conversations with a simulated player.
- Export — review your adventure and download a game-readable JSON file.
The constructor includes:
- English and Russian interfaces.
- Local browser drafts, downloadable backups and JSON import.
- Undo and redo.
- Named selections for dialogue connections and quests.
- One-click creation of quest offer and turn-in answers.
- A checklist showing how each quest can be turned in.
- Validation for structural errors, broken references and contradictory turn-in conditions.
- Separate export modes for manual NPC templates and automatic-placement modpack presets.
Your drafts stay in your browser. The constructor does not upload your story or require a connection to your Minecraft server.

The bilingual wiki covers installation, NPC creation, the simple and advanced editors, dialogue branching, objectives, rewards, JSON authoring and modpack distribution—with downloadable examples.
Create Your Own NPCs
Use the NPC Summoning Sigil to place a character, then right-click that NPC with the sigil to open its editor.
Customize:
- Names and titles displayed above NPCs.
- Player, classic NPC and living mob appearances.
- Player skin textures from resource packs or public direct HTTPS PNG URLs.
- Mob entity types, including compatible creatures from installed mods.
- Standing or sitting poses.
- Stationary behavior or wandering within a configurable radius.
- Main-hand, off-hand and armor equipment.
- Dialogue openings for active, ready-to-turn-in and completed quests.
NPCs pause their wandering and face the player during conversations.
Write Branching Conversations
Create standalone conversations or connected dialogue trees with multiple player answers.
Each answer can:
- Continue to another line.
- End the conversation.
- Offer a quest.
- Open quest turn-in.
- Set or clear a story flag.
- Change faction reputation.
Control answer visibility using quest progress, inventory items, story flags and reputation thresholds.
The in-game dialogue editor includes multiline text, searchable selections, a graph view and a local conversation preview.
Quest offers require explicit acceptance: choosing a friendly greeting does not silently accept a quest.
Design Simple or Advanced Quests
Start with the three-step in-game quest wizard, or use the advanced editor for more complex adventures.
Combine seven objective types:
| Objective | Description |
|---|---|
| Have items | Check the player’s current inventory. |
| Obtain new items | Track inventory increases after the stage begins. |
| Deliver items | Require and consume specified items. |
| Defeat mobs | Count player-credited kills. |
| Talk to an NPC | Interact with a specified RPG NPC. |
| Visit an area | Reach coordinates within a radius in a chosen dimension. |
| Interact with a block | Right-click a specified block type. |
Create multiple ordered stages, each containing several required objectives.
Configure:
- Repeatable quests.
- Prerequisite quests.
- Required and forbidden story flags.
- Separate quest givers and receivers.
- Custom quest categories and completion messages.
- Item consumption where applicable.
Delivery objectives always consume their required items. Gathering objectives track inventory increases—not specifically mining events.
Make Rewards Worth Returning For
Reward players with:
- Multiple guaranteed item stacks.
- A choice of one additional item reward.
- Experience points.
- Faction reputation changes.
- Custom item data through SNBT.
Quest turn-in can use an authored dialogue answer or an automatically generated answer at the receiving NPC.
Follow Adventures Through the Quest Journal
Open the journal with J or the journal item. The key can be reassigned in Minecraft’s controls.
The journal provides:
- Active, ready and completed quest records.
- Search, category filters and status filters.
- Quest descriptions, current stages, objectives and rewards.
- Turn-in contact and destination information.
- A faction reputation overview.
- Quest abandonment with confirmation.
Track a quest on the HUD and receive progress notifications without opening the journal.
NPC markers are personal to each player:
- Golden
?— an available quest. - Green
!— a quest ready to turn in. - Ellipsis — an available conversation.
Built for Modpacks, Not Just RPG Servers
Package ready-made NPCs, dialogues and quests as modpack presets.
Choose automatic placement:
- Near world spawn.
- Near a matching village: plains, desert, savanna, snowy, taiga or any supported vanilla village.
- At fixed coordinates in a chosen dimension.
Configure placement offsets and safe-surface searching. Persistent world records prevent normal restarts, reloads and chunk unloading from creating duplicate NPCs.
Distribute presets through:
config/fensrpgquests/presets/- A world datapack.
Operators can inspect placement states, reload definitions and retry failed placements. Saved NPCs can also be exported as presets directly from their in-game editor.
The web constructor currently edits one NPC per project. Create additional preset files for more characters. Use
@selffor portable standalone NPC contacts; raw NPC UUIDs are world-specific.
JSON & Authoring Tools
Prefer working with files? Import, validate, spawn, apply and export NPC templates through commands.
Templates can contain:
- NPC appearance and behavior.
- Equipment.
- Dialogue graphs.
- Related quests, objectives and rewards.
Manual templates are stored in config/fensrpgquests/templates/. Stable identifiers support updates without unnecessarily changing quest identities.
The in-game editors provide shared drafts, undo/redo, validation and save-conflict protection. An optional demo adventure is available for learning the workflow.
