Changelog

0.1.0 — first release

For Soulrend on Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge 47.4 or newer. Install it on the client, the server, or both; neither side needs the other to have it.

Loading

  • Epic Fight builds its skill-book loot tables once per datapack reload instead of once for each of ~7,000 loot tables. Simply Swords reads its config once per reload instead of on every value lookup.
  • KubeJS recipe removals by output item are applied in one pass over the recipes instead of one full pass each (same recipes removed).
  • Zip resource packs list a folder by walking only that folder's entries.
  • Epic Fight skips an unused per-animation file hash and lists its animated layers once per renderer rebuild.
  • Log Begone compiles each filter regex once instead of on every log line.
  • First launch: Default Options' resource packs are selected before the first resource load, so the game loads its resources once instead of twice.

JEI

  • Iron's Spellbooks' arcane-anvil recipes, the grindstone's disenchanting recipes and the anvil's book-enchanting recipes are built when you look them up, not all at every world join.
  • The tooltip text JEI indexes for search is cached per world and reused while mods, configs, scripts, resource packs and the world's datapacks are unchanged.
  • Item tooltips skip a vanilla attribute pass that Attributes Lib throws away and redoes.

Graphics

  • Graphics presets (Potato, Low, Medium, High, Ultra) cover vanilla, Embeddium, Oculus and about 40 settings of the pack's heavier render mods. High is the pack's own look.
  • Video Settings opens on FSO's Graphics tab. It has the preset on top, the shader choice, and every General and Quality setting. Other mods' pages are under the same entry, and Oculus' shader packs come below it. Changing any setting shows Custom.
  • High and Ultra switch on your chosen shader: Bliss (default) or Complementary Unbound. Potato to Medium switch shaders off.
  • A new install starts on High, the pack's own look with shaders. Until you first open Video Settings, the title screen tells you so in red, with how to go lower.
  • Falling Leaves' leaf atlas keeps only its own sprites instead of a second copy of every mod's particle textures (about 500 MB less video memory).
  • FancyMenu's editor bar is hidden once. Switching it back on in FancyMenu is kept.
  • A "Reset to defaults" button on the Graphics page (and on FSO's own preset screen) puts graphics back to how a new install starts: High, Bliss as the shader, and the pack's brightness, GUI scale, fullscreen, frame rate, VSync, view bobbing and indicator settings. It asks first. Keybinds, sound and other mods' own settings are kept.

Gameplay

  • Singleplayer: ServerCore's server load-shedding no longer lowers your render and simulation distance (it used to cut them to 12 and 6 at every world start, save that into your options, and lower them further while terrain generated, so terrain stopped loading).
  • Singleplayer: while you choose your origin and class, or after a minute away from the keyboard, the terrain 384 blocks around you is generated in the background (Chunky). It stops the moment you play.
  • Singleplayer: while terrain around you is still being generated, the frame rate is capped at your monitor's refresh rate (60 to 120), so the world generator gets the CPU the extra frames took. New terrain fills in about 1.5× faster with an unlimited frame rate on a 4-thread CPU. Your own limit applies again once it's in.
  • Falling Trees: a felled tree takes its whole canopy with it. Falling Trees goes by each leaf's stored distance to a log, and in freshly generated terrain many of those are wrong for the first seconds, so parts of a canopy could stay in the air until they decayed. Leaves another tree still holds stay where they are.

Smoother frames (same picture)

  • spark's background profiler stays off, also after a pack update switches it back on. On Windows it stopped the whole game about 75 times a second.
  • When Java runs with its stock settings, the title screen offers better Java arguments for your launcher (with a Copy button and where to paste them): garbage collection then stops the game for about 30 ms instead of up to 200 ms.
  • Subtle Effects reads its settings and the biome once per tick instead of for every block it checks, and skips fireflies' biome lookup where its own light checks rule them out anyway.
  • Ambient Environment's grass and water shading is computed once per block column instead of for every colour lookup.
  • Sodium Dynamic Lights reads its light sources without locking and allocating for every block light.

Origins

  • When you pick your origin and then your class, a Back button on the class screen takes you back to choose your origin again. Nothing is given out until every choice is made, so going back costs nothing. It needs FSO on the server as well (always the case in singleplayer); without it the button doesn't show.

Server

  • The pack's per-entity tick scripts (Forest Elf, Revenant, Beast Master) run only for the entities they act on.
  • Origin checks from scripts skip building and parsing a command.

If something goes wrong

  • /fsoclient lists the player commands:
    • preset, shader, preset check;
    • restore puts back every setting FSO changed;
    • features and feature <id> on|off;
    • safemode on|off turns every FSO change off from the next launch;
    • jeicache clear.
  • Server operators have /fso feature and /fso safemode.
  • Launching with -Dfso.safemode=true turns everything off for one launch without changing any file.
