Enchanting Rework
Enchanting, without the slot machine.
Enchanting Rework is a vanilla+ mod. It doesn't add new enchantments, new blocks or a new magic system. The enchanting table, lapis, bookshelves and XP all work the way you know. It fixes one thing: the enchanting table is too random. Today you put in a sword, hope for Sharpness, and usually skip the table for a librarian villager instead.
With Enchanting Rework, you can choose the enchantment you want and pay a fair price for it. You can still roll the dice like vanilla if you prefer.
How it works
Three tiers, like vanilla's three rows
The table still shows three options. Each row is a tier, unlocked by your level and the bookshelves around the table:
| Tier | Needs | Max enchantment level | Random extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Level 5 | II | – |
| II | Level 15 + 8 bookshelves | III | up to 1 |
| III | Level 30 + 15 bookshelves | Enchantment's max | up to 2 |
A row you haven't unlocked is greyed out, and its tooltip shows what it needs.
Enchanting Templates: pick your enchantment
A new third slot (where the book used to float) takes an Enchanting Template. Each template has a theme, and the item you're enchanting decides what that theme becomes:
- An Edge template gives Sharpness on a sword, Power on a bow and Piercing on a crossbow.
- Every row gives the guaranteed enchantment; the tier you pick sets its level and its chance of random extras.
- Cost: one template + lapis that climbs with the level (1 / 2 / 3 / 5 / 8 for levels I–V) + 2 XP levels per enchantment level. Sharpness V = 1 Edge template + 8 lapis + 10 levels.
Making templates: find a book once, use it forever
Templates are inscribed at a crafting table from an enchanted book. The book is given back, so one Sharpness book, from fishing, loot, a villager or the table, lets you make Edge templates forever.
M A M M = theme material (×4)
A B A A = amethyst shard (×3)
M C M B = enchanted book (kept)
C = core: paper, diamond or echo shard
| Template | Enchanted book | Material | Core |
|---|---|---|---|
| Endurance | Unbreaking | Obsidian | Paper |
| Speed | Efficiency, Quick Charge, Lure | Redstone | Paper |
| Air | Feather Falling | Feather | Paper |
| Force | Knockback, Punch | Slime Ball | Paper |
| Blast | Blast Protection | Gunpowder | Paper |
| Deflect | Projectile Protection | Armadillo Scute | Paper |
| Edge | Sharpness, Power, Piercing | Nether Quartz | Diamond |
| Guard | Protection | Iron Ingot | Diamond |
| Fire | Fire Aspect, Flame, Fire Protection | Blaze Powder | Diamond |
| Water | Respiration, Depth Strider, Impaling | Prismarine Crystals | Diamond |
| Holy | Smite | Glistering Melon Slice | Diamond |
| Venom | Bane of Arthropods | Fermented Spider Eye | Diamond |
| Fortune | Fortune, Looting, Luck of the Sea | Emerald | Echo Shard |
| Delicacy | Silk Touch | Cobweb | Echo Shard |
A book with several enchantments can make any template it fits; the material decides which.
Still want to gamble? You can.
With no template in the slot, the table rolls vanilla-style random enchantments, still capped by the tier system. It's cheap, it's random, and it's a great way to find your first books.
Bookshelf resonance: build a library
Put enchanted books in chiseled bookshelves near the table, and their enchantments become more likely in random rolls and template extras. Books are never used up, change the books to re-roll the table, and the tooltip shows what's resonating (up to 6 books per enchantment). Enchanted books on the shelves glint, too.
Small things
- One trip to the table: an item can be enchanted at the table once. The anvil works exactly like vanilla.
- Chiseled bookshelves count as bookshelves once they hold 3 or more books.
- Treasure enchantments stay treasure: Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst and curses never come from the table and can't be inscribed.
- Two new advancements: By Design (enchant with a template) and Well Read (enchant with resonating books nearby).
- JEI support (optional): every template has an Inscribing recipe page and an info page.
For modpack and datapack makers
Add your own enchantments to a theme. Every theme has an enchantment tag. Add an enchantment to it, and the matching template can give it, and books holding it can be inscribed into that template:
data/enchantingrework/tags/enchantment/catalyst/edge.json
{ "values": ["mymod:serration"] }
Tagged enchantments are used when none of the theme's vanilla enchantments fit the item.
Create whole new themes, or change recipes and costs, with a datapack file per template in data/<namespace>/enchantingrework/catalyst/. Each file sets the template item, its enchantments (ids or #tags) and its inscribing ingredients.
Tune every number in config/enchantingrework.json: tier requirements, level caps, lapis costs, extra-enchant chance, resonance strength and more. Servers send their config to players automatically.
Advancement trigger: enchantingrework:table_enchant, with catalyst (true/false) and resonant_books (a range), for your own advancements.
