Enchanting, reworked. Every world speaks its own magic language, and you'll have to learn to read it.

Description

Enchanter's Script replaces vanilla's random enchanting with a short memory minigame built on the Standard Galactic Alphabet. Each world gets its own secret cipher, so the symbols on your enchanting table mean something different in every save.

Write enchantments well and you're rewarded with bonus enchantments, now rewarded based on your skill rather than luck. Learn the cipher and you'll read bonus options at a glance.

Vanilla is the floor: a picked enchantment is always applied, whatever happens. Skill only ever adds to it.

Enchanting at the table

The table looks and feels like the one you know: the rotating book, your item and lapis, and up to three offers, more with more bookshelves.

Pick an offer, and the book opens to a page of empty slots:

  • The name appears in Galactic symbols inside the slots, then fades away.
  • Write it back from a keyboard of symbol tiles: every letter of the name, plus a few decoys.
  • Lapis buys time. All the lapis in the table is spent, and more lapis means a longer timer available to decipher the enchantment.

Depending on your accuracy deciphering the enchantment, you will get to choose additional enchantments, but they will appear ciphered. To decipher the letters of the additional enchantments, you will need to use your own amethyst shards!

Ciphered books

Enchanted books from loot, fishing and villager trades arrive ciphered. You can see what they hold, but they won't work in an anvil until you decipher them. Right-click one to play the same minigame on the spot. A great result can raise its level, while a poor one may cost a level. Level I books are never lost: just try again. Books enchanted at the table come out ready to use.

(Book ciphering can be turned off in the config)

The Enchanter's Codex

Craft an Enchanter's Codex from a book, a lapis lazuli and an amethyst shard. It lists your world's 26 symbols, and fills in each letter as you learn it: any letter you place correctly in a successful minigame is recorded for good. With hover hints on, learned letters even show up when you hover over a tile in the minigame!

Configuration

In the config you can configure:

  • Book deciphering on or off.
  • Hover hints on or off.
  • Accessibility multipliers for the reveal time and the writing time, from 0.5× to 10×.
  • Amethyst reveals: how many letters amethyst can reveal on the bonus screen, 5 by default.

Modded enchantments work automatically, with names built from their IDs. Datapacks can give any enchantment a better word with a file in data/<namespace>/enchanter_words/:

{
  "enchantment": "minecraft:binding_curse",
  "word": "curse of binding"
}
