Description

Better Progression aims to extend the fun of vanilla Minecraft's early-game progression across the entire game.

Minecraft's progression is at its strongest when every upgrade matters: finding iron changes what you can fight, what you can mine and where you feel comfortable exploring. Later on, much of that disappears. Better Progression turns that feeling into a full-game progression system built around regions, mob levels, equipment Quality, upgrade materials, Runes, scaling loot and rare miniboss encounters.

The goal is not to turn Minecraft into a completely different RPG. The goal is to make exploration and upgrading your gear continue to matter long after your first diamond.

REGIONS AND DIFFICULTY

The world is divided into persistent level regions. As you travel farther, regions generally become more dangerous, but the progression is not made of simple concentric rings: seeded geographic variation creates stronger and weaker areas throughout the world.

The Nether and End begin at higher difficulty levels, and structures inherit appropriate regional difficulty so that the enemies and rewards inside them remain coherent.

Your current player level and region level are displayed on the HUD, and pressing J opens a persistent exploration map showing the regions you have discovered.

Your player level is a power rating, not another XP system. It is calculated from your strongest recognized weapon, equipped armor, Quality, Runes, enchantments and other relevant combat bonuses.

MOB LEVELS

Hostile mobs scale to the region in which they spawn.

A mob's level represents its actual effective strength rather than being a cosmetic number. Its power budget can be distributed across:

  • base species strength
  • body stats
  • size and movement
  • weapons and armor
  • equipment Quality
  • enchantments
  • Runes
  • special traits

This means two mobs of the same type and level can still be built differently.

Higher-level regions can also generate enemies with progressively stronger materials and better equipment.

Tamed/player-owned animals are excluded from regional combat scaling.

GIANTS

Any eligible naturally spawned hostile mob has a very small chance to become a Giant.

Giants are rare 3×–5× miniboss variants with increased size, health, defense, damage, reach and scaled projectiles.

A Giant can exceed the normal power of its region and rewards the risk with increased XP, guaranteed Upgrade Materials and high chances for Rune-related drops.

EQUIPMENT QUALITY

Eligible equipment has one of five Quality tiers:

Average → Reinforced → Tempered → Refined → Masterwork

Quality improves the stats that actually matter for that item.

Weapons gain stronger damage and durability. Armor gains stronger defense and durability. Tools gain mining speed and durability. Ranged weapons gain increased raw projectile damage. Animal armor such as Horse, Nautilus and Wolf Armor also participates in the Quality system (where its vanilla mechanics allow it).

Equipment is divided into four Upgrade Classes based on its intrinsic power. The system compares weapons, tools and armor against vanilla-style Iron, Diamond and Netherite benchmarks, allowing conventional modded equipment to fit naturally into the system as well.

UPGRADE MATERIALS AND UPGRADE STONES

Quality is improved through resources earned while progressing through harder areas.

Upgrade Materials come in progressively stronger stages and classes. Materials can be combined into higher stages or classes, or crafted into the appropriate Upgrade Stone. 9 class X materials equal 1 class X+1 material.

Upgrade Stones are then used in the Smithing Table with compatible equipment to advance it one Quality tier at a time.

This creates a reason to keep exploring increasingly dangerous regions even after obtaining your preferred weapon or armor: instead of constantly replacing your favorite gear, you can continue developing it.

QUALITY-BASED MINING PROGRESSION

Important resources also require sufficiently upgraded tools.

Resource Required Quality
Iron Reinforced
Gold, Redstone, Lapis, Obsidian Tempered
Diamond, Emerald Refined
Ancient Debris Masterwork

Normal Minecraft material requirements still apply. Quality doesn't let a wooden pickaxe mine Ancient Debris just because somebody somehow made it Masterwork. Although that would be funny.

RUNES

Weapons and armor can gain Rune slots as their Quality increases. Runes have five levels and provide additional ways to specialize equipment.

Might increases weapon damage. Tempo increases melee attack speed. Guard adds armor. Fortitude adds armor toughness. Vitality increases maximum health. Executioner deals additional damage to low-health enemies. Leech restores health from direct weapon damage. Second Wind provides emergency Resistance and Regeneration when your health becomes critically low.

Runes can be socketed through the Anvil. They can also be removed, returning a Rune Shard while subjecting the anvil to normal wear.

Rune Shards can be combined to obtain higher-level Runes, allowing the Rune system to progress alongside the rest of your equipment.

Strict tools such as pickaxes do not have Rune slots; hybrid weapons such as axes do.

PROGRESSION-AWARE LOOT

Loot adapts to the difficulty of the area where it is found.

Generated equipment in structures can receive appropriate materials, Quality, enchantments and Runes while remaining within the area's power budget. High-level loot can also replace portions of ordinary filler rewards with Upgrade Materials or Rune Shards without simply stuffing additional items into every chest.

Structures are broadly treated as Tame, Exploration or Dungeon locations. Dungeon loot receives stronger progression bias, while villages and other safer structures remain more conservative.

Trial Chamber Vaults use the chamber's own progression level, with Ominous Vaults biased toward stronger legal rewards without breaking the area's actual progression ceiling.

Villager equipment trades are similarly tied to the region in which their offers are established.

Fishing and archaeology remain untouched.

BOSS PROGRESSION

The major vanilla bosses are treated as fixed progression milestones.

The Wither is Level 160 and the Ender Dragon is Level 220 by default.

MODDED GEAR COMPATIBILITY

Better Progression is designed to recognize conventional modded equipment automatically.

Items using standard Minecraft weapon, tool, armor, shield, glider and equipment systems can automatically receive appropriate Quality behavior and power classification. A modded sword is evaluated as a weapon; a pickaxe is evaluated as a tool; an axe remains a weapon/tool hybrid.

For more unusual mods, Better Progression's configuration supports explicit item categories, additional power values, material families, Upgrade Classes, custom dimensions and structure-category overrides.

Bespoke mechanics that do not expose standard Minecraft information are deliberately not guessed, preventing a strange custom tool from suddenly gaining absurd weapon damage because the mod misidentified what it does.

Better Progression is designed to work especially well alongside mods that add new structures, enemies, weapons, armor and exploration content: those mods provide more places and equipment to discover, while Better Progression gives that content a long-term progression framework.

CONFIGURATION

World caps, dimension difficulty curves, distance scaling, geographic variation, Giant settings, Upgrade Classes, material compatibility, modded dimensions, structures and several other systems can be adjusted.

Most configuration changes are automatically reloaded while the game is running (in singleplayer).

Any issues can be reported by leaving a comment.

Enjoy.
