Description
Drained
Water is air. Lava is air. Obsidian cannot be made.
World generation stops producing fluid. Oceans, rivers, lakes, aquifers and springs come out dry — and their basins stay carved. Lava goes the same way: lakes, springs, the deep lava under the caves, the basalt deltas, and the Nether's lava sea.
No obsidian
The only obsidian left in the Overworld is what the world already holds: the frames of its ruined portals, and the odd lucky chest. Each ruin still gives up about four real blocks.
Vanilla
Nothing is added to the game. Every rule is vanilla; the mod only takes away.
The Nether is dry too
Without its lava sea the Nether loses its main source of light, and the sea becomes a vast open floor.
What else changes
- Ocean monuments come out dry, so guardians no longer spawn in them (configurable).
- Ice spikes and icebergs still stand. Plain ice does not: it was the frozen surface of a sea that is gone.
Installing
- Server-side. Every rule is world generation, structures and loot, so only the server needs it — players join with an unmodded client. For singleplayer, install it like any mod.
- NeoForge and Fabric, Minecraft 1.21.1 and 26.2. No dependencies — not even Fabric API.
- Start a new world. Only chunks generated after installing are affected.
For modpacks and servers
- Drained works on Minecraft's own generation machinery, so biome and dimension mods built on it are drained too. A mod that places fluid with its own feature code is outside its reach.
- Nothing is converted after the fact: chunks that already exist keep their water and lava.
drain_lava=falsekeeps a dry Overworld without the obsidian lock, for packs that want the landscape but not the progression change.
Configuration
config/drained.properties — every rule has its own switch: water, lava, bare sea floors, crying portals and the share of real obsidian they keep, and dry monuments. Chest loot is vanilla by default; one more switch strips obsidian from chests for a harder lock.
