Domovoi

Domovoi is a cozy NeoForge mod that adds a Slavic-inspired household spirit who lives around your home, responds to how you care for it, accepts bread and milk offerings, and eventually helps keep the house clean and safe.

What does the mod add?

Domovoi adds a new Domovoi Hearth, a household spirit called the Domovoi, an offering cup, household decay, insects, and a relationship system based on Respect and Comfort.

Once a Domovoi Hearth is placed inside an enclosed home, it detects the interior of the structure and establishes it as the Domovoi's home.

Over time, signs of neglect can begin appearing inside:

• Dust
• Cobwebs
• Bugs
• Moths

Cleaning your home builds the Domovoi's Respect for you.

You can also leave bread and milk in his offering cup. Offerings build Comfort and are the quickest way to encourage the normally shy Domovoi to reveal himself.

As your relationship develops, you may catch him around the house performing his own activities.

Getting Started

To attract a Domovoi:

1. Craft a Domovoi Hearth using a campfire, bread, and milk buckets.

2. Place the hearth inside an enclosed home.

3. Allow the hearth to recognize the interior of the house.

4. Keep an eye on your home as dust, cobwebs, moths, and bugs begin to appear.

5. Clean the house and leave bread or milk offerings to build your relationship with its new resident.

The Domovoi is intentionally shy, so you may not immediately see him even though his presence can already be felt around the home.

Respect & Comfort

The Domovoi keeps track of two parts of his relationship with the household

Respect

Respect is earned by caring for your home.

Cleaning the decay that appears around the house gradually earns the Domovoi's respect. As he becomes more respectful of the player and the household, he becomes more willing to help with chores himself.

Comfort

Comfort is primarily gained through offerings.

Place bread or milk in the Domovoi's offering cup to make him feel more comfortable in the home. A comfortable Domovoi is more willing to come out of hiding and allow the player to see him.

What does the Domovoi do?

Once he becomes comfortable enough around the household, the Domovoi can be found living his own little life around the home.

He can:

• Sweep and clean dust and cobwebs around the house
• Hunt bugs and moths that have gotten inside
• Accept bread and milk offerings
• Hide when he does not want to be seen
• Find somewhere comfortable to sleep
• Help ward hostile mobs away from the hearth at night

Moths can also appear in multiple variants.

The Domovoi is meant to be a small atmospheric companion rather than a traditional tameable pet. He belongs to the home and hearth rather than following the player everywhere.

The Hearth

The Domovoi is tied to his hearth and the home surrounding it

Breaking the Domovoi Hearth releases the spirit currently associated with that home. If you place another hearth afterward, you will need to attract a new Domovoi

Folklore Inspiration

Domovoi was inspired by the Domovoi of Slavic folklore, household spirits traditionally associated with the home and hearth.

The mod takes that idea in a lighthearted direction: instead of simply adding a folklore creature to fight or tame, the Domovoi becomes part of the everyday life of your Minecraft home.

Take care of the place, leave him something to eat, and you might occasionally catch a cozy little old man quietly taking care of it in return.

Compatibility

This initial ModJam release was developed and tested primarily in singleplayer

Domovoi was created for CurseForge ModJam 2026: Echoes of the Past.

The project interprets the theme through folklore that survives within the home: rather than uncovering the past in a ruin, the player invites an old household tradition into the place they live.
