Directional Map Markers Backport

Backports Minecraft 26.3-style directional player markers to NeoForge 1.21.1, making vanilla and explorer maps easier and more intuitive to navigate.

Directional Map Markers Backport

Bring modern map navigation to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1.

Directional Map Markers Backport brings the newer directional player-marker behaviour inspired by Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 to NeoForge 1.21.1.

Instead of the player marker simply showing your location, it rotates to represent the direction you're facing. This makes vanilla maps much easier to navigate while exploring, searching for structures, travelling long distances, or using explorer maps.

Features

  • Directional player markers that rotate with your facing direction.
  • Works with normal vanilla filled maps.
  • Works with vanilla explorer maps, including structure maps such as Ocean Explorer Maps.
  • Directional behaviour works both while moving and while standing still and rotating.
  • Supports on-map and off-map player markers.
  • Keeps the familiar vanilla map experience—this is not a minimap replacement.
  • Designed specifically for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 + NeoForge.
  • Lightweight and focused on the map-marker feature rather than adding unrelated gameplay systems.

Why download it?

If you prefer playing Minecraft 1.21.1 because of your favourite mods or modpacks, you don't have to move to a newer Minecraft version just to get modern directional map markers.

This backport makes existing vanilla maps more useful while keeping them feeling like Minecraft maps. Look at your map and you can immediately tell both where you are and which direction you're facing.

Modpack Compatibility

The mod has been tested in a heavily modded NeoForge environment, including Just Create SMP Season 2, as well as with vanilla map and explorer-map behaviour.

Modpack authors are encouraged to test compatibility with their particular modpack configuration before distributing it.

Nether Behaviour

Minecraft's newer directional markers can behave differently in the Nether. This mod aims to preserve the behaviour of the newer vanilla implementation rather than changing Minecraft's dimension-specific map behaviour.

Disclaimer

This is an independent, fan-made Minecraft mod. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or supported by Mojang Studios or Microsoft.

The project is inspired by directional map-marker behaviour introduced in newer versions of Minecraft and independently brings similar functionality to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1.
