Description
DARK LANTERN ADDON
Willpower. Fear. One battery. Two possible futures.
The Dark Lantern offers power with a personality. Created for Foi1y's Lantern Corps: Revival, this unofficial fan addon brings a detailed black-and-gold battery, John Stewart's five-part oath, and a recharge system shaped by your actions. Protect a village. Spread fear. Return for another charge—and discover which corps answers.
A battery with presence
A sculpted hourglass body, green core, ribbed surfaces, metallic trim and ring charging port give the Dark Lantern its distinctive appearance. The handle stands upright while held and folds backward when placed. The approved held and placed models are included directly in the addon: no separate resource pack or patched Amendments installation is required for the held/F5 appearance.
Speak the oath. Watch the energy rise.
Equip one functional Green or Yellow ring and spend some energy. Hold the battery and right-click, or place it and right-click with an empty main hand. John's oath appears in five timed parts with green-and-gold text and the final LIGHT! emphasis. Every completed Dark recharge releases both green and yellow particles.
The outcome stays silent. Check your ring or the original mod's corps power display to see where you landed. If your Lantern suit is already active when the ring changes, the addon uses the destination corps' native suit ability, animation and sound to carry that transformation onto the screen.
Build Willpower — or cultivate Fear
Your next recharge is influenced by three scores: Will, Fear and Dark Exposure. A fresh personality starts at 50/50. Positive deeds favor Green; fear and harmful acts favor Yellow. A small chance of either color always remains.
| Acts of Will | Default points | Acts of Fear | Default points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete a villager or trader trade | +1 Will | Apply an attributable native fear effect | +2 Fear |
| Heal an injured tamed wolf with meat | +2 Will | Hurt a villager or wandering trader | +3 Fear |
| Successfully breed animals | +2 Will | Kill an innocent protected wild animal | +8 Fear |
| Defend a civilian or pet from an attacking hostile | +5 Will | Kill an innocent polar bear, marine mammal or iron golem | +12 Fear |
| Complete a zombie-villager cure you started | +10 Will | Kill a villager or wandering trader | +15 Fear |
| Gain Hero of the Village | +15 Will | Kill a tamed pet | +20 Fear |
Positive rewards have daily limits, with additional per-victim limits for certain actions. Hurting your own wolf and immediately healing it does not earn Will. Killing with a player-fired projectile counts; unattributed environmental deaths and automated FakePlayer farms do not. Ordinary livestock and fish are exempt from wild-animal penalties. Modded animals can be added through configuration or entity tags.
The longer you return, the stronger its influence
Meaningful Dark recharges add Exposure and gradually reduce your maximum Green chance. The ceiling starts at 95% and drops by five percentage points per meaningful recharge until 50%; the decline then slows to two points, and eventually one, stopping at a 10% ceiling. Without recovery, that takes 37 meaningful recharges. Actual Green odds can still fall to the 5% floor.
Good deeds help retrain the battery: every five awarded Will points restore one ceiling point. Active play away from meaningful Dark charging slowly reduces Exposure and restores the ceiling too. Offline time does not advance recovery. A color change starts a ten-minute active-play cooldown; charging still works during that time.
By default, at least 5% of ring capacity must be missing for a meaningful recharge. Smaller top-ups play the oath and particles without another personality roll or deeper influence. Original Green and Yellow batteries keep their original mechanics.
See your spectrum
Press U to reveal the green-and-gold Personality Spectrum: Will, Fear, Exposure and your next-roll odds. Brief on-screen deed notices show when actions count. Rebind the toggle in Controls; move, resize or hide the display and notices in the client configuration.
Your world. Your rules.
Prefer the Dark Lantern's appearance without changing corps? Set enableCorruption=false in your world's dark-lantern-personality.toml. Your current Green or Yellow ring then recharges without a color roll, while the model, oath and mixed particles remain. Saved personality progress resumes if you turn the system back on.
Configure deed weights, cooldowns, recharge thresholds and recovery timing. Extend animal protection with entity IDs or datapack tags. Client display settings live in dark-lantern-hud.toml. The addon does not reset global keybinds; each corps retains its native saved power/accessory data.
Install and begin
- Use Minecraft Java 1.20.1, Forge and Java 17.
- Install Foi1y's Lantern Corps: Revival 0.5.2, plus Palladium, Architectury API, Curios API and GeckoLib.
- Add the 1.20.1 Forge versions of Moonlight Lib, KubeJS and Rhino.
- Put the Dark Lantern Addon JAR in
mods. Remove older versions of this addon. - Search the creative inventory or JEI/EMI for Dark Lantern Battery. Operators can also use
/function drew_dark_lantern:give.
Optional: Jade supplies the placed battery's name and icon. Pehkui is recommended for the original mod's giant/scaling constructs. Clients and servers need matching addon versions and required mods. This beta has no survival crafting or loot recipe; it does not replace the original mod's natural ring rewards.
Beta status
Earlier test builds verified basic recharge and both ring transitions. This expanded build passes compilation and automated rule/package checks. The new deed hooks, Spectrum HUD, fear-attribution hook and dedicated-server startup still need live validation. Compatibility with every modded animal is not guaranteed. Back up your world before changing mods.
