Description
Hidden Enchants
What's on your gear? In this mod, you don't know until you look. Enchanted items hide their enchantments, so every piece of gear and every book is a bit of a gamble. Some enchantments are blessings and some are curses, and until you reveal them you won't know which.
Hidden Positive Enchantments
While a positive enchantment is hidden, it works at a lower level. Multi-level enchantments lose two levels (to a minimum of level 1), so a sword with Sharpness 3 acts as if it had Sharpness 1 until it's revealed. Enchantments at level 1, such as Mending or Unbreaking I, and single-level enchantments like Silk Touch, are completely disabled until revealed.
Hidden Curses
Hidden curses with multiple levels work one level higher than their real level. Single-level curses, like Curse of Binding or Vanishing, stay fully active either way. In vanilla this won't change much, since vanilla curses only have one level, but if other mods add curses with multiple levels, those curses will hit harder while hidden.
The Runescribers Altar
Reveal, hide, and move enchantments at the Runescribers Altar. What it does depends on the item you put in the lens slot:
Reveal: reveal some or all of an item's hidden enchantments, depending on the lens.
Hide: hide enchantments again, which is useful when you want to keep a good enchantment secret or bury a curse.
Transfer: move enchantments from one item to another, including onto an enchanted book. Enchantments must be revealed before they can be moved. They move onto an unenchanted copy of the same item, and the Master Core can also move them onto a plain book.
Lenses and Cores
Lenses come in tiers. Amethyst, quartz and stellar crystal lenses (for revealing) and flint, soul and void lenses (for hiding) can be crafted from materials you mine or farm. Overworld, nether and end lenses can only be found in loot. Crafted lenses wear out faster and cost more XP, so the loot ones are worth hunting for. The Master and Dark Master lenses never wear out. Cores handle transfers, and the rarer ones combine into Master Cores for the strongest lenses.
Curses Matter
Curses get new life here. Hidden, they're a risk. Revealed, you can decide whether to keep them, move them somewhere harmless, or hide them again.
Configuration
Hidden Enchants has a config file so you can tune it to your modpack or server:
- Loot enchanting: the chance that loot gear gets extra enchantments, how quickly that chance drops with each extra roll, and the minimum and maximum total enchantment levels per found item.
- Curses: the chance that loot rolls a curse, and the minimum and maximum curses per item.
- Enchanting table: the curse chance at the lowest and highest level costs, scaling between them.
- Gear cap: the maximum total enchantment and curse levels on a single item.
- Accessibility: a toggle to show curses in red text. It’s off by default.
Compatibility
Hidden Enchants works by adjusting enchantment levels through NeoForge, so it applies to modded enchantments, too, as long as the other mod reads enchantment levels in the standard way. If you hit a conflict, please report it.
Additional Mod Recommendations
If you enjoy this system and want more from it, check out my other mods that build directly on it. CodeBadger: Hidden Enchants - Stellar Depths was originally part of this mod, but I split it off so this one could be purely the enchantment-hiding system, and the other could add more uses for the mod's materials.
There's also a smaller, less intrusive addon called CodeBadger: Hidden Enchants - Runescribers. It adds a new villager job based on the materials and lenses from this mod, with the Runescribers Altar as its job block, and gives you another way to get certain materials.
Both of these mods require Hidden Enchants.
It is also strongly recommended you get CodeBadger: Curses+ to give the mod more curses to hide making the game more interactive and interesting in more aspects.
