What's new

0.2 - Precipitation

Added

Kinds of precipitation

  • Drizzle and downpour: how dense the streaks are, how fast they fall and how loud the rain is follow its intensity. A downpour also hides the distance.
  • Sleet just above freezing: rain and wet snow at once.
  • Hail, and it is rare: only the strongest thunderstorms on a hot afternoon drop it, in bursts of a minute or two over part of the storm. Fast ice pellets shatter on the ground with their own sound, which is duller and quieter under a roof. Hail damage is a separate option, hailDamage, off by default.
  • Freezing rain. The air aloft is now simulated on its own: it is carried by the wind and only slowly takes on the climate of the ground under it. When warm air blows over frozen ground, the snow melts on the way down and the drops freeze on contact. The ground gets a glaze of ice that is as slippery as ice and melts once the air is above freezing. It happens by itself where warm and cold regions meet.

Seeing the weather

  • Showers in the distance are drawn as soft grey veils of rain from their cloud to the ground, as far as the clouds are drawn. Until now only the rain within ten blocks of the camera was drawn.
  • Rain nearby is heard even while it is dry where you stand: from its side, quieter the farther it is, out to about 50 blocks. Walking towards a shower, you hear it before you are in it. Splashes also start at the edge of a shower a few blocks away.
  • Seen from outside, the underside of a rain cloud is darker.
  • Clouds beyond the render distance are no longer washed out to pale ghosts by the fog: they fade into the haze towards the edge of the cloud range, together with the showers under them.
  • Radiation fog on still, humid, clear nights, settling on low ground and burning off in the morning.
  • A closed cloud deck greys the sky, the horizon and the clouds and hides the sun, as rain does.

Wet ground

  • Rain soaks the ground and warm, dry, windy air dries it. Puddles fill the hollows of natural ground in steady rain, join into one sheet of water, dry out afterwards and freeze over in frost.

Vanilla life follows the local weather

  • Rain puts out fires and keeps them from spreading.
  • Beds work in a thunderstorm over the bed.
  • Bees go home and stay in the hive while it rains over them.
  • Monsters spawn in the gloom of a thunderstorm; foxes run for shelter and pandas cower when it thunders overhead.
  • The weather_check loot condition of data packs asks about the weather where the loot drops.

A world with climate belts

  • New world type Climate Belts, next to Default and Large Biomes on the world creation screen. The equator runs along z = 0 and the poles are 10 000 blocks north and south of it: rainforest at the equator, deserts and badlands in the subtropics, savanna, then temperate forests, taiga and tundra, and past the poles nothing but snow and ice. The belt borders stay ragged, and every belt keeps patches of its neighbours.
  • Since Climora takes its climate from the biomes, temperature, rain and snow follow the belts by themselves.
  • Only the placement of biomes changes; terrain, caves and structures are vanilla. The default world type is untouched.

Compatible with Particle Rain

  • Particle Rain's rain and snow particles follow the local weather. They fall only where it rains or snows, even if it is dry where you stand. Whether they are rain or snow depends on the air temperature there, not the biome. They are as dense as the precipitation: sparse in a drizzle, dense in a downpour. Its after-the-rain effects start when the rain over you stops.
  • With Particle Rain installed, Climora no longer draws its own rain and snow streaks and splashes near you, so nothing falls twice. Particle Rain's options to draw the default rain, snow and splashes, and its rain volume slider, still work. Hail, distant showers, clouds and fog are still drawn by Climora.

Compatible with Sound Physics Remastered

  • With Sound Physics Remastered, rain and hail are muffled by walls and echo like other sounds: in a house you hear the rain through the door and the windows, in a cave it echoes. That mod leaves vanilla rain alone, so Climora plays rain and hail under its own sound names, which it does process, and drops its own "under a roof" muffling so nothing is muffled twice.
  • The client option weatherSoundPhysics turns this off: rain and hail then sound as in vanilla, untouched by that mod.

Forecast and control

  • /climora forecast [pos]: pressure and its trend, sky, rain or snow and thunderstorms for the next 1, 3, 6 and 12 in-game hours. The pressure part is exact; rain is estimated from the air upwind.
  • weatherSpeed (×0.25–×8): weather systems, clouds, rain and drying run faster or slower. The day, the temperature and the wind speeds keep their pace.
  • New forced weather: /climora weather fog|drizzle|downpour|freezing_rain|hail. A forced thunderstorm hails only when the weather would let it; hail makes it hail at once.
  • /climora cell shows hail, the air aloft, wet ground and fog; /climora stats shows how much of the time it rained, stormed, hailed and froze.

Settings — server: weatherSpeed, hail, hailDamage, freezingRain, puddles; client: distantRain, weatherFog, weatherSoundPhysics.

Languages — every command message is translated, not only the block names, and Climora now speaks 20 languages: Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Italian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Dutch, Czech, Swedish, Vietnamese and Indonesian join English, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, German, French and Spanish.

Changed

  • Climate data format version 6: the air aloft, wet ground and the weather clock are saved. Worlds from 0.1 are upgraded automatically, with no jump in the weather; their cells re-sample their base climate for the new snow profiles.
  • Within a cell, the temperature follows the biome under your feet: a snowfield next to a meadow stays cold, the meadow is a little warmer. Until now a whole cell, 128 blocks wide, had one average climate.

Fixed

  • Snowy biomes thawed every day. Snow-covered ground got the day/night swing of bare ground, so snowy plains reached +2 °C at noon and the snow melted. Snow reflects most of the sunlight: snowy biomes now warm by only a few degrees by day and stay below freezing all day, and so does their edge next to a warmer biome. Snow that already melted in an existing world comes back with the next snowfall.
  • Rain did not put out fires. Vanilla checks global rain before it looks at the blocks around a fire, and global rain is always off with local weather, so fires burned through any downpour.
  • The description line at the top of the config files kept the text of the version that created them.
