Clay Companions

A little warmth. A little clay. A friend who remembers.

Clay Companions adds small clay spirits awakened from decorated pots above a burning campfire. Raise a companion, teach it words and build a friendship through conversation, gifts, exploration and shared work.

The pottery sherds used in its creation shape its personality and remain visible on its body. Each companion develops memories, habits and fears as it lives alongside you.

Getting Started

Craft a Coal Heart, place a decorated pot above a lit campfire and use the heart on the pot.

The in-game handbook explains the recipe, awakening ritual, personalities and care. It is provided on first join and can also be crafted from a book and clay.

Use an empty hand to check on your companion. Sneak + right-click cycles its movement mode. Interact with a chest item to access its bag, or give it clay to heal it.

Address your companion by name in chat. Teach it an item name while holding that item, then ask it to bring the item or perform a task. Tools and supplies are needed for relevant jobs.

Growth and Rebirth

At level 5, fire your companion over a lit campfire using a coal block. At level 10, apply glaze using a lapis block or amethyst.

If your companion breaks, recover its Dim Heart and repeat the awakening ritual. Its memories survive.

Requirements

• Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1
• Forge; the project targets version 47.4.10
• Java 17
• Install on both the client and server for multiplayer.

The companion's language and behavior systems run locally inside the mod. No external AI service or API key is required.

Installation

Install Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, place the compiled mod .jar in your mods folder and launch your Forge profile.

The internal mod ID and commands use hearthclay.
