ChaosLoop Radio

A push-to-talk key for the ChaosLoop walkie-talkie, and a cleaner scoreboard. Client-side, and inert on servers that do not use it.

What's new

If your radio key did nothing at all, that was the server, not this

The server half never registered the radio channel. This mod checks before it sends anything — which is what makes it safe to leave installed everywhere — so it correctly sent nothing, forever, and said nothing about it. The key was dead in single player, over LAN and on a dedicated server alike.

That is fixed in ChaosLoop for Fabric 1.1.0. Update the server side and the key starts working. Nothing you change here will help on an older server build — but this release makes it *tell* you that, which is the actual complaint.

It said nothing when nothing was listening

A dead key looks exactly like a key bound to the wrong button, a server without ChaosLoop, a server whose radios are switched off in the config, and a genuine fault in the server half. There was no way to tell them apart from inside the game.

Press the key on a server that is not answering and you now get one grey line saying so, once per session. Still nothing is sent, and still nothing is sent on any server that has not asked for it.

Push-to-talk was ignored for the first part of every reconnect

The real bug in this mod, and a loud one.

It only ever spoke on a change — key down, key up — and the server forgets you the moment you disconnect. So after every reconnect there was a stretch where the server did not know you had this mod at all.

A server that thinks you have no push-to-talk key falls back to the setting for people without it, which by default transmits whenever the radio is switched on. So your first words after rejoining went out to the whole channel, every time, until you happened to tap the key.

It now says hello the moment the connection will carry it, before anybody presses anything. Push-to-talk is in force from the first second you are back.

Notes

The sidebar and the key binding are unchanged, and so is the protocol — one byte, only to a server that has said it speaks it. Still safe to leave installed everywhere.

R by default, rebindable in Options → Controls → ChaosLoop.
