Add some clay tool heads (hoe, axe, pickaxe, shovel, and sword). These are crafted normally, but without the handle. When you obtain the tool head, you bake it in a furnace to get ceramic tool heads, which then become normal tools. These are better than stone tools, but not as good as iron ones.

By the way, the hammer no longer requires the Shift key; that bug was fixed in version 4.0
