Care For Them

Bring Xoonglins to your world! Build homes, meet their needs, and watch their civilization grow. Fully customizable and perfect for modpacks!

Turn Your Factory Into a Thriving Civilization!

You've built an impressive technological modpack with massive automated factories producing endless streams of resources, from wood and iron to… cake. Chest after chest is now brimming with delicious cakes and other goods. But here's the problem: what do you do with all of it?

Enter Care For Them, a mod designed to give your creations purpose!

This mod introduces the Xoonglins, a brand-new mob that populates your world. These mischievous yet adorable creatures rely on you to meet their needs. They crave food, homes, and care. In return, they bring life and activity to your world.

Note on Xoonglin Appearance

By default, Xoonglins use a custom mob model. If you prefer so, you can switch to a human-like player model by setting useHumanoidModel = true in the mod config (cft-common.toml).

How It Works

  • Each Xoonglin belongs to a social class, and every class has unique needs to fulfill: food and goods delivered to their home, a home of the right kind, buildings to visit, company, sleep, music, light…
  • Provide for them, build the structures they ask for, and keep them happy to help them thrive.
  • Happy Xoonglins will move up the social ladder, unlocking new needs and challenges. Unhappy ones fall back down.
  • Xoonglins have jobs depending on their social class: farmers, bakers, fishers, lumberjacks, miners, smelters, guards, healers, priests, traders and many more. They work in the world, using the workshops, farms and pastures you build for them.
  • Xoonglins follow a daily schedule: they work, have free time and rest, depending on their class and job.
  • Some needs only matter at certain times or places, like warmth at night or in cold biomes.

Getting Started

Begin your journey with the Leader's Staff, a key item introduced by the mod. Here's how to get started:

  1. Build some homes for your Xoonglins to live in.
  2. Use the Leader's Staff on these homes (right-click their door while crouching) to designate them as suitable housing. If the building isn't valid, the staff tells you why.
  3. Watch as Xoonglins begin to spawn in your world!

From there, it's up to you to provide for their needs and help them flourish. Xoonglins will have offspring if they are happy enough!

Workshops, farms, taverns and other structures are registered the same way, by using the staff on their key block (a door, a furnace, a fence gate, a bell…). Using it again on a registered structure checks it again.

You can compete with your server mates for the happiest and most populous Xoonglin village! Use the built-in commands to check it: /happinessLadder, /populationLadder and /socialstructure.

Sample Classes

The mod comes with seven sample social classes, which show most of what the mod can do. Each home must have a door and a chest, and is made of four groups of blocks (floor, walls, interior and roof), each one from a given set. The items needed by Xoonglins must be provided in their home's chest.

Settler (spawns on its own)

  • Home: floor of any planks, walls of logs and planks, roof of wooden stairs. There's room for a bed.
  • Needs: potatoes, bread, logs, water from a cauldron (except when it rains), a bed to sleep in, and some company.
  • Jobs: hauler, builder, flower gatherer and lumberjack.

Mountain Dweller (spawns on its own)

  • Home: floor of chiseled stone bricks, walls of logs and planks, roof of wooden stairs.
  • Needs: potatoes, logs, living high in the mountains, and coal to keep warm at night.
  • Jobs: quarry miner and smelter.

Citizen

  • Home: floor of stone, walls of cobblestone, roof of stone bricks.
  • Needs: bread, coal, a visit to the tavern, communion at the temple and some music. Terracotta, books or iron swords will lead them to a higher class.
  • Jobs: baker, cook, farmer, fisher, rancher, tavern keeper and trader.

Artisan

  • Home: floor of terracotta, walls of bricks, roof of red terracotta.
  • Needs: chicken, clay balls, terracotta and books to read.
  • Jobs: paper maker and scribe.

Soldier

  • Home: floor and walls of stone bricks with some iron bars, roof of stone brick slabs.
  • Needs: chicken, flint, an iron sword every few days, and a smithy to use.
  • Jobs: guard, healer and enchanter.

Patrician

  • Home: floor of deepslate tiles, walls of polished andesite with some glass panes, roof of polished granite.
  • Needs: porkchops, golden nuggets, books, a cat, and well lit surroundings.

Noble

  • Home: floor of polished diorite, walls of quartz with some glass panes, roof of smooth quartz. It must be lit.
  • Needs: beef, cake, diamonds, a flower garden, and strolls around the village square.
  • Jobs: blesser.

Interfaces

  • Xoonglin Info Screen: right-click a Xoonglin with the Leader's Staff to see its happiness, needs, social class, inventory and job status, and to change its job.
  • Social Class Browser (press V): a visual graph of the full class hierarchy. Click any class to explore its needs, stats, and upgrade/downgrade conditions. Its Census tab shows your population, its happiness and its most common problems.
  • Need icons: an icon above each of your Xoonglins shows its most pressing need, and you get notified when one of them changes class.
  • Jade integration: if Jade is installed, looking at a Xoonglin shows its class, job and happiness.

Fully Customizable

The mod comes with sample needs, jobs, structures and social classes, but everything is configurable via datapacks. You can create your own tailored experience to suit your modpack or server.

You can find the documentation on how to do so on the mod's website: https://hyperbaton.github.io/cft/ . It also explains how other mods can add new kinds of needs, jobs and structures.
