Description
C2ME-Betterlight
C2ME's own light engine for Minecraft 1.18.2. An add-on for C2ME-Forge.
C2ME-Forge ships with Starlight built in. Install C2ME-Betterlight next to it and C2ME's own light engine takes over, on the server and on the client: both how light spreads and how it is stored.
Why switch
| C2ME-Betterlight | Built-in Starlight | |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong light values players saw (client test, 5 runs each) | 0 | 94 |
| Worst frame at spawn (client test, average of 5 runs) | 133 ms | 185 ms |
| Average FPS (same test) | 564 | 566 |
| 16,129-chunk pregen, dedicated server (5 runs each, alternating) | 72.6 s | 72.4 s |
- Correct light where you play. In our client test (teleporting into new terrain and back, five runs each, same C2ME build), players saw no wrong light at all with C2ME-Betterlight, in every run. With Starlight, one of the five runs showed 94 wrong values.
- Exact on the server. The light it stores and saves matched a full relight in every test world we ran: overworld, Nether, End, chunk borders after a world is extended, 5,000 block edits and their undo, Biomes O' Plenty, Twilight Forest and other world generation mods.
- Fewer hitches, same FPS. The worst frame was smaller in 4 of 5 test windows (at spawn 133 ms against 185 ms, averaged over 5 runs), at the same average FPS.
- No pregen cost. World pregeneration is as fast as with Starlight (72.6 s against 72.4 s, a difference smaller than our test can measure).

Requirements
- Minecraft 1.18.2 with Forge 40
- C2ME-Forge 0.2.0-forge.8.2, exactly this version. The add-on works closely with C2ME's internals, so each release is made for one C2ME version; any other version is refused at startup with a clear message.
Installation
- Install C2ME-Forge 0.2.0-forge.8.2.
- Put
c2me_betterlight-1.0.0-all.jarin the samemodsfolder. - Start the game or the server. The log says
C2ME light engine active.
No config needed. Install it wherever C2ME-Forge is installed: on a server it lights and saves the world, on a client it lights what you see, and singleplayer gets both.
Good to know
- Easy to switch off: start with
-Dc2me.lightEngine.c2me=falseand the built-in Starlight runs instead, no need to remove the jar. - Steps aside for other light engines: with Starlight, Radon, Phosphor or ScalableLux installed, C2ME-Betterlight does nothing and your light engine keeps working.
- Your world stays a normal world: the light it saves is read by vanilla Minecraft and by Starlight, so you can remove the add-on at any time.
License
All Rights Reserved. You may use C2ME-Betterlight in singleplayer and on servers, and include it in modpacks that download it from its official page (for example CurseForge modpacks). No re-uploads and no modified versions. The full text is in the LICENSE file inside the jar.
