What's new

Bons and Furious 1.0.46

383 controls for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, up from 313 in 1.0.42. It includes 1.0.44 and 1.0.45, which were not published separately. This release adds 70 controls, fixes several older ones and supports Forge 47.4.28, JEI 15.71 and ModernFix 5.27.89 next to the older builds. Still one JAR for client and server with nothing else required; every target mod is optional.

Fixed

  • Collections Of Optimizations 4.7 and newer: four controls ran in neither mod (terrain_density_memo, terrain_final_density_reuse, terrain_surface_estimate_share, curios_lazy_modifier_map). They stepped aside for COO's copies, and COO 4.7 and newer leave those copies out next to Bons and Furious. A control now steps aside only when COO's own mixin plugin applies its copy. vanilla_beardifier_influence_bounds now also works next to COO 4.6 and newer.
  • vanilla_repellent_search_sections (since 1.0.30) never acted next to Corgilib, Friends and Foes, Moonlight, Oh The Trees You'll Grow, Supplementaries or The Bumblezone. Their mixins add a hidden compiler-made method to the server level, which the control took for another mod's change. It now acts there (a piglin or hoglin repellent search took 28 instead of 42 microseconds with Radium).
  • farmersdelight_tool_action_items and vanilla_camera_fluid_memo also check other mods' hooks on the same code, and applied only when all of those mods were installed (AzureLib, Relics and AllTheLeaks for the first; Vivecraft, Valkyrien Skies, Clockwork, Alex's Caves, Blast from the Past and Snow! Real Magic for the second). They now apply without them; a checked mod that is installed must still be the tested build.
  • mowziesmobs_capability_handles (since 1.0.28) could keep an answer for an entity whose own capability method answers Mowzie's capabilities by its state. No such entity is known in our pack; the control is now exact for every entity.
  • Ben's Sharks: the merged prey search of 1.0.42 made its random rolls twice on a merged goal's first tick. It now follows the separate goals exactly from the start.
  • JEI recipe deferral (off by default): a deferral stopped midway now clears all of its state.

Newer Forge, JEI and ModernFix

Forge 47.4.24 to 47.4.27, JEI 15.62 and ModernFix 5.27.89 now make eight of our changes themselves, several of them from our own pull requests. On those builds the eight controls stand down with one INFO line ("fixed upstream in ..."); on older builds they keep working as before: forge_custom_payload_heap_copy, forge_plain_translation_format, forge_status_ping_channel_groups, forge_object_holder_pass_index, jei_server_item_registry, jei_sort_index_keys, modernfix_c2me_cache_strongholds and vanilla_structure_template_hits. jei_join_recipe_deferral now also works with JEI 15.62 and newer, and forge_status_ping_memo with Forge 47.4.28. Every other control was checked against both sets of builds.

70 new controls

  • World generation and level.dat (both sides): Quark's big stone clusters test their shape before reading a block (26.9% less time per chunk a cluster touches), biome searches reuse the distances they already know (13.0% less per search, TerraBlender's searches included), and level.dat reuses the biome lists it already encoded (a save took 154 instead of 180 ms in our pack). Worlds whose level.dat keeps TerraBlender's surface rules skip the stacked copies, and a fix stops level.dat from saving one more copy at every world open (48 KB more per open). Without C2ME, noise gradients come from a lazy table.
  • Start-up and resource reloads: zipped resource and data packs list a folder from an index (3,472 listings took 11.9 instead of 305 ms), the client's mod resources ask only the mod files that have a namespace, ModernFix's mod-file caches are built ahead in the background, Forge's registry holder lists grow in powers of two (one pass over 41 registries took 12 instead of 421 ms), and with Oculus resource paths are checked without a hook call per character. Entity Model Features, GeckoLib, AzureLib and Text Animator no longer throw an exception with a full stack trace to learn that a token is not a number, nor Entity Texture Features and LDLib for an absent rule property or texture metadata (thousands per load; an EMF model load pass took 148 instead of 239 ms in our pack). Without a shader pack Embeddium reads each chunk shader source once.
  • Client frames: the camera-shake searches of L_Ender's Cataclysm, Alex's Caves, Legendary Monsters, Mowzie's Mobs and Cryptic Foes walk no entity sections while nothing shakes, the outline of the block you look at and outlined text are reused, GeckoLib models build their constant file locations once, Terramity's look and aura accessories skip their client scans, and Punchy and Subtle Effects skip work whose result nothing uses.
  • Mobs and entities: moving mobs that are not burning skip the block reads of their fire check, wild animals load without an owner exception, projectile hit tests skip Immersive Aircraft's vehicle search while the level has no vehicle, wall-climbing mobs (Nyf's Spiders) gather their collision boxes directly, and Reliquary, Ribbits, Farmer's Delight baskets and the animation handlers of Born in Chaos, Luminous Beasts, Rustic Engineer, Terramity and Under the Moon skip searches and copies that cannot change anything.
  • Capabilities: ModernFix's capability dispatcher skips providers that provably cannot answer, and Spawn, Botania and Clanging Howl keep their answers on the entity (a lookup took 10 instead of 37 nanoseconds). The existing Mowzie's Mobs and Cataclysm controls now keep the value itself.
  • More mods: Ars Nouveau's rewind history, Cable Facades' block hooks while no facade exists, Item Filters' tag filters and L2 Hostility's curio checks do less repeated work.

Eighteen of the new controls are fixes:

  • Memory: after dimension changes, respawns or logouts, old worlds or players were kept by JEI, Distant Horizons, Flywheel (Create contraptions), Smart Particles, Unique Dungeons, TreeChop, Celestisynth, Brutality and More Artifacts, and Nature's Aura kept every chunk a player had stopped watching. Each of them now lets go.
  • Valkyrien Skies (client): ship block entities ticked once more after every visit (845 tickers for a ship's 169 after four), and world chunks the server forgot stayed loaded on the client. Both are unloaded now.
  • Species: a mob disguised with a Wicked Mask no longer crashes the game when another mod draws it ridden or carried.
  • TerraBlender: level.dat no longer grows by a copy of every surface rule at each world open.

Known: in the tested pack, Distant Horizons and Valkyrien Skies still keep old worlds after dimension changes through three more holders that this release does not fix yet.

Every new control is on by default.

Other changes

  • Collections Of Optimizations 5.1: 60 new rules for 51 controls, so exactly one copy of each shared change runs. 103 controls now step aside for a COO option.
  • terrablender_lazy_namespace_rules now also works with C2ME, Oh The Biomes We've Gone and TerraBlender 3.0.1.11 (a chunk's surface pass took 33.7 instead of 214.2 microseconds in our pack).
  • mowziesmobs_capability_handles and cataclysm_capability_handles keep the value they found (48.0 to 23.2 nanoseconds per Cataclysm lookup).

Tested

Every new control was compared with the code it replaces on the real game classes, with the other installed mods' changes to those classes applied. The release then ran on client and dedicated-server copies of a 500-mod pack, once with Forge 47.4.28, JEI 15.71 and ModernFix 5.27.89 and once with the older builds, with the controls on, off, and in a mode that runs the new and the original code side by side: about 4.4 billion comparisons on a client, none different. The memory fixes were checked by counting the old worlds each holder kept after six dimension changes and three reconnects: none with the fixes. Two rebuilds of the released JAR were byte for byte the same.

Install

Replace the older Bons and Furious JAR with bons_and_furious-1.0.46.jar and restart. Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47.3.22 or newer within 47.x; tested with 47.4.28 and 47.4.16. No required dependencies. Existing config choices are kept and new keys are added with their defaults. Every control has its own switch in config/bons_and_furious.properties, and a control whose target mod is missing or at another build is skipped.

The whole-pack benchmark on the project page was measured with 1.0.31 and has not been repeated for this release.
