Better Advancement (Read First)
Balanced, themed rewards for every vanilla advancement. Complete an advancement, get something useful.
Overview
Better Advancement is a lightweight Fabric mod that hooks Minecraft's vanilla advancement system and grants a
hand-picked reward of items and/or XP the first time you complete each advancement.
No more empty feeling after hours of grinding — every milestone pays out.
Features
- Rewards for every vanilla advancement across Story, Nether, The End, Adventure and Husbandry.
- Balanced and themed — early game gives basic resources, late game gives powerful items.
Mine Stone pays 4 Coal; How Did We Get Here? pays a Totem of Undying and 5000 XP.
- Granted exactly once — a persistent per-player ledger means re-logging, server restarts, or revoking and
re-earning an advancement can never duplicate a reward.
- Inventory friendly — items merge into existing stacks, and anything that does not fit drops safely at your
feet.
- XP straight to the player — no orbs to chase.
- Server-side — works in single-player and on Fabric servers. Clients do not need the mod. Each player is
tracked independently.
- Fully data-driven — the entire reward table is JSON. Add, replace or remove rewards with a data pack, then
run `/reload` — no restart, no recompiling.
- Admin command — `/betteradvancement rewards list|check|grant` for server operators.
How it works
The mod hooks the server-side advancement completion path. When a player earns an advancement, the reward table is looked up by advancement ID and the configured items and XP are granted. Because rewards are matched by ID, the mod is compatible with vanilla advancements and with data packs that add
their own advancements — those simply get no reward unless you write them one. Data packs that replace the vanilla advancement tree are not supported.
Supported Minecraft versions
Pick the file that matches your game version (1.20.1/1.20.5-1.20.6/1.21.1/26.1-26.2/26.3+). Fabric API is required.
Want a version that is not listed? Leave a comment — 1.20.2–1.20.4 and the 1.21.2–1.21.11 range are not covered yet.
Why are there several files?
A Fabric mod is compiled against one Minecraft version. Between 1.20 and 26.3, Minecraft renamed core classes, changed how data results are represented, and moved from Java 17 to Java 25 bytecode. One jar cannot load on both ends, so each supported line gets its own build. Every file is the same mod with the same features.
What changes between versions
The reward system is identical everywhere. What changes is which vanilla advancements exist:
- 1.20.1 — 83 rewards. Eight advancements that post-date 1.20.1 (mace, trial chambers, wolf armour, crafter) are omitted.
- 1.20.5 – 1.20.6 — 85 rewards. Adds the crafter and decorated-pot advancements.
- 1.21.1 and 26.1+ — 91 rewards, the full set.
Item data components (enchantments, potions, glint) require 1.20.5+. On 1.20.1 those rewards fall back to the plain item.
Installation
1. Install Fabric Loader for your Minecraft version (26.1+ requires 0.19.5 or newer; 1.21.1 requires 0.16.14
or newer; 1.20.x requires 0.15.11 or newer).
2. Download Fabric API for the same Minecraft version and put it in your `mods` folder.
3. Download the Better Advancement file matching your Minecraft version.
4. Place the `.jar` in your `mods` folder.
5. Launch Minecraft with the Fabric profile.
That's it! The rewards are granted automatically.
Server installation
- Install the mod on the server. Clients do not need it and can join without it.
- All players receive rewards independently, tracked per player.
- On a server the mod must be present, or no rewards are granted.
FAQ
Will I get rewards for advancements I already completed before installing the mod? No. Rewards are granted only for advancements completed after installation, which prevents mass retroactive item duplication. Server operators can retro-grant one at a time with /betteradvancement rewards grant.
Can I change the rewards? Yes. The reward table is JSON, fully editable through a data pack, and applies with /reload.
Does this mod work on servers? Yes. The server needs the mod. Clients do not.
Does this work with data packs that add new advancements? The mod only rewards advancements that have an entry in the reward table. Custom advancements get nothing unless you add a reward file for them — which you can.
Will this break my existing world? No. It only listens to advancement events and never modifies world data.
Do rewards duplicate if I die or the server restarts? No. A persistent per-player ledger records what has already been paid out, and death does not clear it.
