Beavers & Unicorns 1.3.0 beta (Fabric 26.3)
Curse Maven Snippet
What's new
New
- African tulip tree. It grows in jungles, preferably near water, and from saplings anywhere you plant them.
- Buds open by themselves over time, so a tree that has been eaten bare flowers again.
- A golden variety has its own sapling.
- Glow lichen grows on the lower trunk, the buttresses and the roots of tulip trees, mostly on the north side. It looks better at night than this sentence suggests.
- Two epiphytes live on the tree: the orchid and the aechmea. They grow on the bark, never in soil. Bone meal makes the orchid bloom and moves the aechmea one stage on.
- Flowering orchids seed themselves onto the tops of nearby branches.
- Full African tulip wood set: logs, wood, stripped variants, planks, stairs, slabs, fences, gates, buttons, pressure plates, doors, trapdoors, signs, hanging signs, a shelf, a boat and a boat with a chest.
- The door is a screen door with a lattice window and louvres, because it comes from somewhere warm. The signs and the shelf keep the vanilla patterns in the new wood.
- The colugo. A nocturnal glider with a skin membrane stretched from its neck to its fingers, toes and tail. It lives on African tulip trees, which means it lives wherever you plant them, not only in jungles.
- On the ground it is helpless and knows it. It moves in clumsy bounds, the membrane folding over its back like a cape, and heads for the nearest trunk.
- It climbs in short bounds, face to the bark, through the leaves and up to the top of the crown.
- At night it glides from the crown top to another tree it can actually reach, steering on the way. It grabs a trunk at whatever height it gets there, even a vertical one, and climbs on. Measured glides of wild colugos lose about one metre of height per four metres flown, and so does this one.
- By day it sleeps high on the trunk, wrapped in its membrane, or hangs under a side branch. Its eyes close. Now and then it wakes, shifts a few blocks along the trunk and dozes off again.
- It eats tulip flowers, flowering orchids, flowering aechmeas and ripe cocoa pods. It drinks from tulip buds. Eating and drinking have their own animation, crumbs, drops and sounds. It remembers the trees where it ate.
- Threatened, it freezes against the bark and passes for lichen. Push your luck and it bolts up the trunk or glides away, if it has the strength left to climb back up somewhere else. Climbing is what costs it; gliding is not.
- Females sometimes give birth during their daytime sleep. The young one rides in a pouch folded from the tail membrane, also in flight, and lets go when it grows up. They do not breed like rabbits: there is a cap on young colugos in any one area.
- The membrane is a real cloth simulation, not an animation. Every patch of it pulls on its neighbours, it trails behind on takeoff, billows in flight and hangs under its own weight on the trunk.
- The colugo has its own voice: quiet, high squeaks at night, an alarm call when it bolts, the rustle of the membrane on takeoff and claws on bark when it climbs.
Fixed
- Beavers blink. They were always supposed to. They never did.
- Beavers now recognise African tulip trees and will fell them like any other.
- Signs and shelves made from this mod's woods are mined quickly with an axe, like vanilla ones. They used to take as long as with your bare hands.
Known issues
- The colugo sometimes skips a short distance instead of moving smoothly: when it walks round a branch to the other side of the trunk, when it grabs leaves in flight and when it settles under a branch to sleep.
- During its bounds on the ground the membrane stretches more than skin really should. It still looks good, which is why it stays like that for now.
- Only English. For now.
- The colugo is neither a lemur nor able to fly. Nobody tells it.
- The parachute frog and the mirage are held back from this beta. They are not finished. Maybe never will. Neither spawns and their eggs are hidden.
- I forgot about the annoying sounds the beavers make. The beavers will remain intriguing and irritating until the next update.
