Backrooms is a survival horror mod for Minecraft Java 1.20.1 — Forge 47.4.28. Explore unsettling corridors alone or with up to four players, solve missions, and escape before the darkness takes your sanity.

Explore, Solve, Escape

Begin in the lobby, choose your difficulty, and enter a maze of yellow rooms, abandoned industrial spaces, and dark corridors.

• Level 0: Follow mysterious notes and complete five connected missions.
• Level 1: Explore an abandoned warehouse and restore its relay panels.
• Darkrooms: Discover a darker route where visibility becomes your greatest challenge.
• Five difficulties: From a 100 × 100 beginner map to a 500 × 500 hardcore maze.

You Are Not Alone

Three entities stalk the corridors, each with its own behavior:

• Smiler: A shadowy presence with glowing eyes and a sinister grin. Watch where you look.
• Bacteria: A towering skeletal humanoid with elongated arms that hunts through the maze.
• The Hound: An aggressive creature that reacts to noise, movement, and eye contact.

Listen carefully. Footsteps, breathing, and distant noises may warn you before an encounter.

Keep Your Sanity

Darkness, nearby threats, and prolonged isolation drain your sanity. As it falls, whispers, visual disturbances, and hallucinations make survival harder.

Use Almond Water to recover sanity, carry a battery-powered flashlight, and search scarce supply containers for useful items.

Hunger does not decrease, so you can focus on exploration and survival.

Ten Lives. One Run.

Each player has ten lives for the entire run.

After a recoverable death, you remain in the same map and have three minutes to find a personal escape door, guided by a heartbeat. Fail to escape and you become a spectator until the next level, provided you still have lives remaining.

Lose all ten lives and you remain a spectator for the rest of the run. If the entire team is eliminated, the run ends.

Save Your Progress

Use marked checkpoint terminals or the pause menu to save your team's progress.

When reopening the world, you return to the lobby, where the host can choose to:

• Start a new run
• Continue from the last saved checkpoint

Checkpoints preserve campaign and player progress. They do not restore every world block or looted container.

Built for Cooperative Play

• Play solo or with up to four players.
• Share mission progress and work together to unlock exits.
• Rest between levels or start the next challenge early.
• Watch surviving teammates through spectator cameras.
• Vote to restart or continue when a participant reconnects during a run.

Players who join an active run wait in the lobby or spectate until the team starts again.

Essential is optional and is not included. Compatibility with Essential has not yet been verified.
